Jr. Lady Jays Win Two Big Games; Jr. Jays Fall To Smackover TeamPublished Wednesday, January 24, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneNevada's junior teams split a pair of games at Smackover Jan. 6, with the girls posting a win and the boys falling. In the girls game, Nevada managed a 40-32 victory. They opened the game with a 4-3 lead after one and were up 14-8 at the break. By the end of three, the Lady Junior Jays were in command 29-18 as they cruised in for the win. The Lady Jays were paced by Ramona Evans' 14 points. Jackie House and Shiketa Henry each canned eight. At the line, the junior squad was 14 of 24. Kim Modica led Smackover with 14 as the only member of the team in double figures. They were eight of 15 at the charity stripe in the contest. When the junior Jays took to the hardwood, they found a Buckaroo team ready and waiting for them. The Jays were ambushed 46-44 in a nailbiter. The Nevada squad opened well, taking a 15-5 lead into the second period. The Jays saw the Buckaroos cut the gap drastically by halftime as they only led 23-21. In the second half, the home team began pulling away as they ran off to a 36-31 lead and held on as the Jays fought back in the final period. Lamar Haynie led the Jays with a dozen points. He was followed by Julius Gulley with 11. Petey Boone had the hot hand for the Buckaroos as he poured in 24 in the contest. Anthony Davis contributed 12 in the victory. There was a major discrepancy in free throws. The Jays were two of four, while the Smackover team lived at the line, connecting on 18 of 30 attempts. Nevada's junior girls had a date with the Lady Bears of Bradley Thursday, Jan. 18, but had an off night as they were dropped 32-16. The Lady Jays opened with a good first period, but faltered thereafter. The Nevada quintet took command in the opening stanza 12-9. The Lady Bears battled to a 14-14 tie at the end of the second period, and took over in the second half. In fact, the Lady Jays were only able to score two points in the entire second half, those coming in the third period. On the other hand, the Lady Bears were hot and poured in eight in the third and 10 in the fourth. Evans led the Lady Jays with six points. Her compadres, House and Henry scored four each. Canone Harris led all scorers with 13 for Bradley. The Lady Jays were zero for one at the line. Bradley, however, connected on six of 12 free throws.
