NHS Whips Smackover, Fall To Bradley By 8-Pts.; Season Record Now 19-6

Published Wednesday, January 24, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

It was win one, lose one last week for the Nevada Blue Jays, as they whipped Smackover, but fell to Bradley.

The Jays threw the Buckaroos 65-57 in their game Jan. 16, boosting their record to 19-5 overall and 6-0 in conference play.

The Jays found themselves on the short end of a 25-14 first quarter score. The situation didn't improve by halftime as the Buckaroos held a 39-26 lead.

However, the Jays always fight back and never give up. In the third period, the Nevada squad had battled to a 47-45 lead and trampled the Buckaroos 18-12 in the final eight minutes for the win.

Reginald Reed dominated the offense with 22 points for the Jays, while Lamarcus Page tickled the nylon for 11. Tavoris Blakely ripped the cords for 10 in the win.

Andrew Jones paced the Buckaroos with 17 in the losing effort, while Lucien Loy added 13 and John Tolin had 11.

The Jays shot less than 50 percent from the line as they only connected on 10 of 24 free throw attempts.

The Buckaroos, however, were deadly from the stripe, netting 20 of 27.

The Jays, though, fell to 19-6 on the season as they tumbled at Bradley 52-40. It may have been the Jays opened the first period with the lead at 16-13 that did them in after having to come back earlier in the week.

By halftime, however, the Bears had roared to a 30-23 advantage, and never looked back. The Bradley squad held a 46-28 lead at the end of three as the Jays were cold from the field, scoring only five.

Reed was again the leading scorer for Nevada with 12 points.

Cowaski Stewart paced Bradley with 13. Tony Watson and Will Adkison each added 12, while Walter Brown scored 11.

The Jays were five of eight from the line, while Bradley hit six of 12.

Nevada traveled to Genoa Tuesday night, and the team is slated to lock horns with Fouke Friday.
