Published Wednesday, January 24, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

It's been up and down for Prescott's Wolverettes as they hit the hardwood recently.

The senior girls demolished Harmony Grove on Jan. 12 67-39.

The game opened relatively close and there was no indication of the type of blowout which was about to occur. The Wolverettes led 24-14 after the first eight minutes had elapsed.

By halftime, they had extended their lead to 12 at 36-24.

Then the bottom fell out for Harmony Grove. The Wolverette offense kicked it into high gear, scoring 17 points, while the defense stifled the hosts, allowing only three.

As the teams entered the final period, Prescott led 53-27.

Laura Culpepper paved the way for the win with 17 points and six rebounds. Ashley Stuart followed with 16 points and nine boards. Leslie Hines scored 11 in the win. Gladies Gulley had eight points and five steals. Jessica Hildebrand contributed six points and six assists, while Amber Arney, Kacy Ammon, Jesna Cornelius and Lori Burke all had two points.

McKenzie paced Harmony Grove with 15.

The Wolverettes were five of 11 at the stripe, while Harmony Grove was five of 19.

Then came Gurdon. Prescott's nemesis.

The Wolverettes had dropped the first meeting by one point to the Lady Go Devils on Gurdon's home court.

The rematch was expected to be as close as it turned out.

However, the end result wasn't what the home team wanted this time, as the Lady Devils clipped Prescott 45- 43.

The Wolverettes led most of the way after a 12-12 first period. Prescott was up by two, 18-16 at the half, and led 32-28 at the end of three.

Butler said her team had every chance to win in the final minute, but couldn't buy a bucket.

With Gurdon leading 45-43 with nine seconds left, the Wolverettes called time.

The play was called, the ball inbounded to Gulley. She passed it off, but it was tipped. Hildebrand picked up the loose pumpkin, giving it to Hines, who got the ball back to Gulley inside.

However, Hines' pass was too far and Gulley couldn't hang on to it.

When the ball went out of bounds, so did Prescott's chances for a win.

Gulley led the Wolverettes with 10 points in the game. Culpepper pulled down 11 boards.

Clayborn paced Gurdon with 14 points.

The Wolverettes were four of nine at the line, while Gurdon was four of 11 from the stripe.

Poor shooting was the name of the game for both teams as Prescott dropped Delight 34-24 to run their record to 14-5 overall. However, the Wolverettes are 0-2 in conference play.

To show how poor the shooting was, Delight's Lady Bulldogs led 3-2 at the end of one. Prescott's two came from free throws as the squad couldn't buy a field goal.

The scoring improved somewhat in the second as the Lady 'Dogs went to the lockers in control 14-9.

The Wolverettes rallied in the third period to tie the game at 18-18, before finding their offense in the final eight minutes.

Gulley led the squad with 10 points and six rebounds. Culpepper pulled down seven boards, while Arney had five rebounds.

Gordon led Delight with 11 points.

Butler said the Wolverettes shot 33 percent for the contest. However, this was still better than Delight's Lady 'Dogs who shot 22 percent.

The Wolverettes were 11 for 15 at the line. Delight was only able to convert four of 13 free throws.

The girls made a trip to Stamps Tuesday, and were scheduled to tangle with Fordyce Friday night.
