Under Consideration By Two Students Via World Wide Web

Published Wednesday, January 24, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Two seventh-grade students in Harvard, Mass., are considering Prescott and Nevada County to be the "ideal location" to relocate the nation's capitol. The relocation is a project in a social studies class.

Caitlin McGarty and Amalia Jimenez found the PCFA.ORG computer and its home pages about Prescott and Nevada County by using America Online and Lycos index to the World Wide Web. They sent an e-mail message to the system administrator:

"Hello! My friend and I need to relocate the nation's capital for a project in school. We need to find an ideal location and with the information we've gathered so far, we think you're it! But we don't have too much information, we only have atlases to go by. So, could you please send us some interesting information about your town?"

PCFA.ORG system administrator Danny Stewart responded by e-amil with a copy of the Prescott and Nevada County information and also asked several other PCFA.ORG users to reply to the request. Several PCFA.ORG users have reported receiving e-mail back from the students.

The students have not said when their project will be complete or how strongly they are considering Prescott and Nevada County. Harvard is a "small suburb with a population of 2,000."

Stewart says this is an example of the power of having a "world wide web" server on the Internet with lots of information about Prescott and Nevada County. "Perhaps the next time I report something like this, it can be in conjunction with an annnouncement for new industry or business which chose to come here because they found PCFA.ORG."

Stewart reminds businesses, churches, civic organizations and government entities to send him information that can be placed on PCFA.ORG. Area computer users who would like access to the Internet are also encouraged to contact Stewart for a free account.

PCFA.ORG's Internet connection is provided by the Prescott Schools in cooperation with the Arkansas Public Schools Computer Network. The Prescott Community Freenet Association asks for contributions to pay for the local telephone lines which allow local computer users to Use Wolf Den.
