Lady Devils 3-0 In 7AA

Published Wednesday, January 24, 1996 in the Gurdon Times

There's no doubt about who the class of the 7-AA basketball conference is at this time.

Gurdon's Lady Go-Devils have posted a 3-0 league record, knocking off Junction City, Prescott and Fordyce in order.

On Jan. 9, the Lady Devils routed the Lady Dragons of Junction City 59-28.

Neither team started well as Gurdon scored seven and Junction City had six in the first period.

However, the Lady Devils scorched the nets for 19 points in the second period in taking a 26-16 lead at the half.

They were even hotter in the third period as they cooled off the Lady Dragons with a 48-22 lead and coasted to the win.

Alicia Clayborn led the Lady Devils with 14 points, while Dwanna Stuckey netted 13.

The Lady Devils connected on eight of 13 free throws, while Junction City was four of 16 at the stripe.

The Lady Devils had a harder time against the Wolverettes.

Gurdon had handed Prescott a one-point loss in a Nov. 21 contest, and the Wolverettes were supposed to be ready for the rematch, this one a conference game.

It was dog eat dog in the first eight minutes as both teams battled to a 12-12 tie.

The Wolverettes fought to an 18-16 lead at the half, with the Lady Devils breathing fire down their neck.

Prescott remained in the lead at the end of three, 32-28.

However, when push came to shove, the Lady Devils responded in the final eight minutes, outscoring the Wolverettes 17-11.

Prescott had the chance to tie the game in the final seconds. The Wolverettes had called time out with nine seconds left.

They inbounded the ball to Gladies Gulley, who passed the ball off. The pass was tipped, but Jessica Hildebrand recovered the ball, passing it to Leslie Hines. Hines, in turn, winged the ball to Gulley on the inside, but the pass was wide and Gulley couldn't hang onto it.

When the ball went out of bounds and Gurdon took over, the Lady Devils inbounded the pumpkin and watched the victory remain theirs.

Clayborn again led the Lady Devils with 14, while Tabitha Thomas and Stuckey each ripped the cords for 13.

Gulley led Prescott with 10.

According to Gurdon coach Donald Williams, the Lady Devils were five of 12 at the line, while the Wolverettes were four of 10 in free throw attempts.

Game three saw the Lady Devils step on the Fordyce Lady Redbugs 46-39 to run their record to 3-0 in the conference.

This was a Jekyll and Hyde game for both teams. There was offense in the first half, each squad fell asleep in the third period, and both rallied in the fourth.

Gurdon opened with a 14-10 lead after one. The Lady Devils were ahead 29-19 at the break.

Then, both hit the snooze alarm. The Lady Devils scored two in the third period, while Fordyce put six in the bucket. Still, Gurdon led the Lady 'Bugs 31-25.

Thomas paced the Lady Devils with 18 points in the contest, while Stuckey was consistent with 13 points and Clayborn added 11.

McClellan and Dominick each scored 11 for Fordyce.

Gurdon was 10 of 20 at the line, with the Lady 'Bugs a scant two of seven.

The Lady Devils faced Nashville Tuesday night, and had a Friday night date with De Queen. Both contests are home games for Gurdon.
