New GHS In Session

Published Wednesday, January 24, 1996 in the Gurdon Times

Administrators in the Gurdon School District are thrilled to be in the new high school.

School was let out for high school students on Jan. 12 and 15. This was done to allow teachers time to get their personal effects moved into the new school and get their rooms in order.

The first day of class at the new GHS was Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Leonard Gill, GHS principal, said the move was smooth and went better than expected.

He said the students were able to start day one, find their lockers and classes and get settled in.

Physical education classes are being held at the gymnasium of the former GHS and the new GMS.

Middle school was closed Tuesday through Thursday to allow time to move and get organized. Students at GMS began classes in their new location Friday.

However, PE students are being bused back and forth for the time being. This will be done until the inside of the new gym is completed. Then, the classes will be held on the new campus.

In addition, basketball teams are being shuttled back and forth as well.

There were some problems getting the kitchen facilities up and working by Tuesday, but, according to Gill, meals have been served since day one at the new school.

"The biggest problem," he said, "is getting students back and forth to the gym and getting settled in.

"It's a matter of setting a schedule and getting used to it."

Gill said the new school campus is larger than the former one, but students have time to get from one end to the other between classes if they don't dawdle.

"The day just flies by here," he said."But we're really proud of it."

Superintendent Bobby Smithson echoed Gill's statement.

He said everything has gone well and there is a sense of excitement from the students. "I'm pleased with how it's gone," he said.

"The staff worked hard moving and setting up. Everybody contributed."
