Nevada Jr. Teams Split During Week

Published Wednesday, January 31, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

It was an up and down week for Nevada's junior teams.

The junior boys dropped a heartbreaker to Genoa 43-41 in overtime on Jan. 23.

The Bluejays opened with a 12-5 lead after one, and led 17-16 at the half. They cooled off in the third period as Genoa took a 25-23 lead. However, both teams were deadlocked at 36-36 as the buzzer sounded ending regulation play.

The Jays were outscored 7-5 in the extra period. Julius Gulley led the Jays with 19, while Lamar Haynie added 14.

The Jays were eight of 14 at the line.

Josh Thane paced Genoa with 13 points, while teammate Justin McMurry added 11. Coy Mason sent 10 through the nylons as well.

Genoa was nine of 20 at the stripe.

In the Jan. 25 game, the Jays clawed the Hope Bobkittens 57-48, running their record to 10-2 overall.

The game was pretty much over from the outset as the Jays ran over the Kittens 18-6 after one. At the half, Nevada's junior boys led 31-20. They pushed their lead to 41-33 at the end of three and continued punishing Hope in the fourth.

Lamar Haynie owned the hoop as he poured in 31 points. Derrick Bell and Julius Gulley each scored seven.

The Kittens were led by Deluchia Rudd's 11.

At the stripe, the Jays were 14 of 23, while Hope was 19 of 34 in free throw attempts.

Nevada's junior girls took it on the chin twice during the week.

They opened the week with a 36-31 loss to Hope.

The Lady Jays held a 6-4 lead at the end of one, and were up 12-11 at intermission. However, the Lady Kittens rallied to take the lead in the third as they went up 26-22 and held on for the win.

Ramona Evans paced Nevada with 13 pints, while Shiketa Henry stroked the nylons for 12.

Courtney Mercer led the Lady Kittens with 18.

From the stripe, the Lady Jays were one of seven, while Hope was only two of seven.

Three quarters of single-digit scoring doomed the Lady Jays against Fouke as they fell 33-23.

The Nevada squad was unable to score a field goal in the opening period, and was only able to connect on two of six free throw attempts. Fouke's Lady Panthers weren't much better as they only scored four points.

Low scoring continued for both teams in the second and third periods. At the half, the Lady Jays trailed 10-6 and were down 16-9 after three.

Both teams heated up in the final six minutes.

Nevada's girls were 12 of 26 in free throw attempts, while the Lady Panthers were 13 of 21 at the line.
