Cubettes Post Victories

Published Wednesday, January 31, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Prescott's Cubette basketball team posted another undefeated week on the hardwoods as they ran their record to 16-2 for the year.

The girls opened with a 37-31 win over arch-rival Hope behind the scoring of Stacy Stockton, who canned 19 in the contest.

The Cubettes opened the game with a 13-6 lead and were up 18-14 at the break.

They slowed down somewhat in the third period as Hope battled back, cutting the gap to one at 27-26. But the Prescott quintet rallied in the final six minutes for the win.

Melissa Beavert and Kamori Scott followed Stockton with seven points each, while Traci Graham added five. Scott pulled down 13 boards, while Beavert had nine rebounds. Stockton had six steals in the contest.

The Hope crew was led by Mercer's game-high 20.

The Cubettes were eight of 12 at the line, while Hope connected on seven of 13 free throws.

From the close game at Hope, the Cubettes posted back to back blowouts as they demolished Stamps 38-14 and routed Camden Fairview 30-12.

After posting a 16-2 lead in the opening six minutes against Stamps, Prescott coach Cecily Butler pulled the starters and cleared the bench.

This move allowed the Lady Yelllowjackets to add two more points to their total in the second period to make the score 16-4 at the half.

The starters returned to the hardwood in the third period to salt the game away as they pulled ahead 30-10. The Cubettes set their game on cruise control for the final tally.

Traci Graham and Stockton paced the Cubettes with 12 each, while Beavert, Scott and Cindy Graham all had four. Jessica Hendrix scored two for Prescott.

Webb led Stamps with six.

It was a foul-free game as the Cubettes were two of four at the stripe, while Stamps was 0-2 at the line.

The third contest, a 30-12 blowout against Fairview, saw Stockton pour in 18 points to lead her team, and the bench cleared yet again in a total team effort.

The Cubettes opened the contest 16-0 and led 24-4 at intermission. With the second team in to play the third quarter, Fairview fought back, somewhat, to cut the lead to 26-8.

Graham canned four points, had four steals and a quartet of assists. Beavert, Scott, Hendrix and Vanessa Brzeski all scored two for Prescott. Leslie Grimes pulled down five boards.

Fairview was led by Johnson's four.

The Cubettes were two of six in free throw attempts, while Fairview went blank in four tries.

In a pair of eighth grade games, Prescott fell 46-19 to Emmet and 31-26 against Hope.

Vontrice Flemons, Sunshine Kelly and Kaylor Sorrells all scored four in the Emmet game, while Gina Haynie canned a trey.

Against the Lady Kittens, Jennifer Ingram poured in 10, while Graham added six.

The junior teams have a Feb. 1 date with Hope before heading to the district tournament at Gurdon, scheduled for Feb. 3-10.
