Wolverettes RollPublished Wednesday, January 31, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneWith conference play winding down, the Prescott Wolverettes have evened their record at 2-2 in the league. The Wolverettes posted four straight wins in the past week, despite members of the team being out with either pneumonia or the flu. The team began the streak with a 34-24 win over Delight in a night neither team could buy a basket. However, the Wolverettes played great defense in the contest, according to Coach Cecily Butler. Prescott's senior squad scored two points in the opening period, both from the free throw line. Delight's Lady Bulldogs, on the other had, could only score three in the quarter. By halftime, the Lady 'Dogs held a 14-9 lead. Prescott tied the game at 18-18 in the third and the Wolverettes found their stroke in the final eight minutes for the victory. Gladies Gulley scored 10 points to lead Prescott and pulled down six boards. Laura Culpepper, before coming down with pneumonia, had seven rebounds. Gordon paced Delight with 11. The Wolverettes were 11 of 15 at the line, while Delight was four of 13. Butler said her squad shot 33 percent on the night from the field. Delight, however, was even more pathetic as they shot 21 percent. The Wolverettes got their first conference win as they blasted Stamps' Lady Yellowjackets 47-31. Butler's crew opened with an 11-3 first quarter lead and built it to a 20-9 halftime advantage as the bench was cleared to give every player some valuable minutes on the court. The Wolverettes stayed in command in the third stanza as they held a 32-15 lead. Gulley poured in 25 for Prescott and pulled down nine boards. Leslie Hines had seven rebounds, while Ashley Stewart had seven assists. Courtney Davis paced Stamps with 12 points. The Wolverettes were 11 of 22 in free throw attempts, while Stamps was a paltry two of 10. Fordyce's Lady Redbugs were the next victim as the Wolverettes slipped by them 56-53 and evened their 7-AA record at 2-2, while going to 16-5 overall. It was a close game throughout as the Wolverettes took a 22-17 lead into the second period and led by seven at the half, 38-31. The Lady 'Bugs cut the lead to two at the end of three as they fought back and trailed 47-45. However, the Wolverettes battled for the entire final eight minutes for the much needed conference win. Hines led Prescott in scoring with 16 points, while connecting on four three-pointers. Gulley added 15 points with a dozen rebounds. Jessica Hildebrand also played string music to the tune of 12 points, while Stewart had eight points and eight boards. Amber Arney scored five points and pulled down 10 boards. Dominick led the Lady Bugs with 25. Neither team shot free throws well as Prescott was six of 17 and Fordyce was two of 10. The Wolverettes ran their season's record to 17-5 with a 47-46 win over Nevada's Lady Bluejays Saturday in a makeup game from earlier this month. Again, the Wolverettes were without the services of Culpepper, and Hildebrand saw limited action as she played with the flu. Prescott found itself trailing most of the game, pulling out the win in the final minute of play. The Lady Jays led 11-8 at the end of one, but the Wolverettes tied the contest at 17-17 as halftime neared. The Lady Jays again led at the end of three as they took a 28-27 lead. However, this game was won and lost at the free throw line. With less than 30 seconds left in the game, the Wolverettes sank a pair to take a 47-46 lead. But, a Nevada player was fouled, sending her to the line. She missed the front end of a one-and-one with Prescott getting the rebound. A Wolverette was fouled, keeping Nevada's hopes alive. The Prescott player missed the front of her one-and- one with Nevada pulling down the board. With three seconds left, another foul was committed, sending Nevada to the line again. Because Prescott had committed 10 fouls, the Lady Jays were granted two free throws. The Wolverettes got a break as both shots went awry and the buzzer sounded ending the game. Hines again paced Prescott with 14 points, including a pair of threes and a four of six streak at the line. Hildebrand, in spite of playing with the flu, scored 10, as did Stewart. Stewart also dished out three assists in the game. Gulley added nine points and had 10 boards. The Wolverettes took to the court in a must-win situation against Nashville Tuesday night. They will end league play Feb. 6 against Junction City. On Feb. 2, however, they step out of conference action for a date with Lockesburg.
