Blue Jays Split 3 Games With Lewisville

Published Wednesday, February 7, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Nevada teams won two of three contests against Lewisville Tuesday, Jan. 30.

The senior boys and junior girls posted wins, while the senior girls faltered against the Lady Red Devils.

The night began with the junior Lady BlueJays edging Lewisville's junior girls 22-20.

Both teams had a slow first period with Lewisville taking a 5-2 lead. Neither team warmed up much in the second six minutes as they went to the lockers at the half with the Lady Devils up 8-5.

Nevada's team heated up somewhat in the third quarter as they were finally able to take the lead 14-11. Though Lewisville outscored them 9-8 in the final stanza, the Lady Jays had just enough left in their tank for the win.

Jackie House paced the Lady Jays with eight points. Ramona Evans put seven through the hoop and Shiketa Henry added six.

Sabrina Fleming led Lewisville with nine, while Cassandra Henry netted five.

Both squads had their problems at the line as each team connected on four of 14 free throws.

The Lady Jays senior team was next up, but couldn't handle Lewisville's team as they succumbed 72-56.

For three quarters, the Lady Jays hung with the Lady Devils. The Nevada team trailed 19-18 after one and was down 29-28 at the half. At the end of three, the score was 50-44, but the Lady Devils blew it open in the final eight minutes for the win.

Tomeka Muldrow led the Lady Jays with 19 pints. Vanessa Evans stroked the nylons for 16.

Lewisville had four players break the double-figure barrier. Sherre Davis led all scorers with 20, while Jessie Harvey netted 17. Tina Turner contributed 16 and Sheree Dismuke sent 11 points through the nets.

The Lady Jays were six of 13 at the line, while Lewisville was 12 of 19 in free throw attempts.

The senior boys gained a small measure of revenge against Lewisville and insured Nevada of a winning night as they cooled the Devils' heels 69-40.

Defense was the name of the game as Nevada roared to a 20-4 lead at the end of one, and led 44-17 when the buzzer sounded ending the first half of play.

The situation didn't improve for the Devils in the third period, as the Jays continued their onslaught 62-36, and cruised in the final eight minutes.

Tavoris Blakely again lived up to his nickname of "Trouble" as he was plenty of trouble to Lewisville's defense. Blakely scored 23 to lead the pack. Reginald Reed followed suit with 17, while Ricardo Young canned 10.

Kevin Sasser paced Lewisville with 15 points.

The tale from the charity stripe saw the Jays connect on seven of 15 shots, while Lewisville was three of six.

The senior squads are slated to play Smackover Tuesday night, and will have to make up Friday night's scheduled conference game against Bradley. They also have a Feb. 9 date with Emerson.

The junior teams were set to begin action in the district tourney Monday night at Genoa Central.
