Cubettes Defeated By Nashville In FinalsPublished Wednesday, February 14, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneTwo powerhouse basketball teams collided Saturday night in the 7-AA Junior District Tournament Finals. Prescott's Cubettes and Nashville's Scrapperettes locked horns again, but, the Cubettes threw in their worst game of the season at the worst time possible. When the smoke cleared in Gurdon's gym, Nashville's girls were holding the first place trophy high after winning 38-27. The Cubettes opened the game with a 5-4 lead in the first, but were outscored 12-9 in the second period and trailed 16-14 at the half. Cold shooting continued in the third period as Prescott was only able to put three points on their tally, while Nashville added eight. At the end of three, the Scrapperettes led 24-17. "The girls worked hard and deserved to win," Prescott Coach Cecily Butler said. "This is the hardest working bunch in the state, but they couldn't pull it out. "Nothing fell and Nashville could do no wrong." Prescott was seven of 16 from the line, while Nashville was an even .500 at six of 12. Stacy Stockton paced Prescott with 17 points as the only Cubette to score in double figures. Porter led Nashville with 18. Nashville made its way to the finals by opening with a 30-18 win over Stamps. The Cubettes played their first contest against the Lady Cubs of DeQueen, posting a hard-fought 48-40 win. Prescott led throughout, taking an 11-9 first period lead, and holding a 20-19 halftime advantage. At the end of three, the Cubettes were up 35-31, and outscored DeQueen 13-9 in the final six minutes. Stockton played string music to the tune of 16 points to lead the Cubettes, while Kamori Scott stroked the net for 15. Tollett led DeQueen with 18, while Revels added 14 in the loss. The Lady Cubs were two of five in free throws, while Prescott connected on 10 of 17. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
