Wolverettes Take JC; Lose To Delight Girls

Published Wednesday, February 14, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Prescott's senior girls ended their conference season with a 69-34 thrashing of Junction City.

However, the Wolverettes ended their regular season on a dismal note as they played poorly against Delight, losing 55-51.

Against the Lady Dragons, Prescott utilized a strong second half to post the lopsided win.

The game opened with the Wolverettes taking a 14-10 lead.

At the half, the Prescott quintet held a slender 25-22 advantage, and it appeared as though the host Lady Dragons would give them a fight to the end.

However, in the third frame, the Wolverette offense caught fire as the team ran to a 46-28 lead, and coasted to the win as the Prescott killer "D" only allowed six points in the final eight minutes.

Gladies Gulley led the way with 22 points and six boards. Laura Culpepper posted 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Leslie Hines contributed 11 points, including a trio of three pointers.

Ashley Stewart ripped down six boards and had six assists, while Jessica Hildebrand recorded five steals and six assists.

Franklin was Junction City's leading scorer with 12.

The Wolverettes were six of 11 at the line, while Junction City was four of 11 at the stripe.

Friday night's game was a nonconference affair against the Lady Bulldogs of Delight.

While the game had no meaning as far as seeding in the district tournament, Prescott Coach Cecily Butler had hoped her team would play well heading into the tourney foray.

What happened was "slack time" from her players, as they committed 24 turnovers, allowed 26 offensive rebounds, a total of 44 rebounds and seven steals by the Lady 'Dogs.

Delight opened with a 9-8 first quarter lead, but saw the Wolverettes take a 24-22 advantage to the lockers at the half.

Poor shooting in the third period spelled doom for the Wolverettes as they were outscored 18-9 as Delight raced to a 40-33 lead and held on for the win.

Butler put in the second string in the second period. She said these girls played well and gave the squad its two-point halftime lead.

Bench scoring was vital in the contest for Prescott as Jesna Cornelius and Leslie Hines came off the pines to score four each. Hildebrand and Lakisha Stuckey contributed two apiece.

Gulley netted 19 in the contest, while Culpepper stroked the nets for 11 and Stewart had nine, seven from the free throw line.

Norton paced Delight with 14.

The Wolverettes were 13 of 19 at the stripe, while Delight connected on 17 of 30 free throws.

Additionally, Prescott hit only 19 of 47 field goal attempts.

"They rebounded, we didn't," Butler said of the contest. "It was a pathetic effort. We didn't block out."

However, with the junior district tournament over, Butler is bringing up three freshmen to play in the senior tourney.

Those three are Stacy Stockton, Leslie Grimes and Melissa Beavert.

"These girls aren't conditioned to lose," Butler said. "Second is not good enough for them."

Gurdon is the top seed in the district, followed by De Queen. Prescott was third overall and received a first round bye in the tourney.

Nashville and Stamps opened the tourney for the girls Monday night, while Fordyce and Junction City had an 8:30 p.m. date.

Prescott plays the winner of the Nashville-Stamps game at 4 p.m. Wednesday, while DeQueen plays the Fordyce-JC winner at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The winners of these games met Friday at 7 p.m., with the victor of this contest to tangle with Gurdon's Lady Devils Saturday at 7 p.m.

The loser of the DeQueen game and the Prescott game will meet to determine fourth place in the district.

On the boys side, Stamps was the conference champ.

Prescott and Nashville got things underway Monday at 5:30 p.m., while DeQueen and Junction City met at 7 p.m.

The winner of the Nashville-Prescott game has a Wednesday contest with Gurdon at 5:30 p.m., while the DeQueen-JC victor tangled with Fordyce at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The winners of these games will meet at 8:30 p.m. Friday, while the losers meet at 5:30 p.m. Saturday to determine the fourth place team, and the final slot in the regional tourney.

Stamps plays the winner of the Friday contest at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
