Cubs Fall To Gurdon In First RoundPublished Wednesday, February 14, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayunePrescott's junior boys played one game in the district tourney and gave the eventual champs a hard time. The Cubs had their hands full in the opening round as they tangled with host team Gurdon Go Devils. They played hard before succumbing 50-40 to the champs to be. Gurdon opened the game by raining threes all over the Cubs and running out to a 17-8 first period lead. Prescott saw five three point shots fall in the period, while Yates managed to hit one for the Cubs in the frame. Gurdon didn't cut Prescott any slack in the second either, as they ran to a 28-15 lead. Prescott won the third period 9-7 as the Cubs worked to cut into the Devils' lead, but were unable to overcome the first period deficit. Wilson led the Cub attack with 17 points, including a trey. Hobbs followed with seven. Gurdon's Terry Cornish had a hot hand in netting 24 points. Adrian Meeks stroked the nylon for 13, including a trio of three-pointers. Prescott was six of 14 at the line, while Gurdon was eight of 18. In other tourney games Fordyce's junior girls opened things with a 45-17 win over Junction City. This was followed by Junction City's boys dumping Nashville 60-55. From there, Nashville's girls dropped Stamps 30-18 and Fordyce's junior boys ended Stamps' hopes with a 38- 33 final score. Gurdon's girls fell in the first round to DeQueen 30-23, while the Devils sent Prescott home 50-40. Nashville's girls ripped Fordyce 40-24 and the DeQueen Cubs clipped Junction City 39-37. Prescott's junior girls dropped DeQueen's girls 48-40 and Gurdon's boys destroyed Fordyce 64-43.
