Junior Jays Drop Final Game In Tournament; Only Fourth Of Year

Published Wednesday, February 21, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Nevada junior boys finished the basketball season with only four losses against 14 wins. Their last loss came week before last in the finals of the 7A South District Tournament at Genoa. Genoa defeated the junior Jays 41-34.

During the regular season they only lost three games. Two of them -- Smackover and Genoa -- were in the conference. The junior Jays did not get to play Bradley, another conference member, during the regular season because of inclement weather.

However, during the district tourney the junior Jays defeated the junior Bears in the semi-finals, thus eliminating any doubt which team was the best. Even though Genoa won the tournament, the Bradley junior boys were conference champs.

In the first game of the tourney, the junior Jays easily took care of Lewisville, 61-35, to advance.

Julius Gulley and Lamar Haynie scored 15 points and 14 points respectively to pace the winners. Edward Johnson scored 16 points for the losers.

In the semi-finals round the junior Jays out-scored Bradley by 19 points for their opportunity in the finals.

Although Gred Davis of Bradley was the leading scorer with 17 points, a better-balanced Nevada team won it, 59-40.

Lamar Haynie scored 16 points and Julius Gulley scored 12 to lead Nevada over the junior Bears.

In the finals, it was Haynie scoring 21 points for the junior Jays as they lost, 41-34, to Genoa. Gulley finished with 10 points.

Justin McMurray scored 16 points for Genoa and Corey Mason followed with 10.

The Nevada junior girls slipped by Genoa, 43-42, in their first game to advance. The win came with a tip-in in the last second. With Nevada trailing 42-41, Genoa missed a free throw and Ramona Evans got the rebound and two points as she tipped it back in at the buzzer.

Evans scored 15 points to lead Nevada. Shikita Henry scored 13 points for the winners.

Shanna Humphries scored 16 points for Genoa.

The Nevada junior girls were eliminated 29-28 in the semi-finals by Bradley. Corinne Harris scored most of the points, 23, for the winners.

Shikita Henry was Nevada's leading scorer with 15 points.

The junior Lady Jays finished the season with 13 wins and seven losses.
