Play Is Close Against NashvillePublished Wednesday, February 21, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneIt was a short trip to the 7AA District Tournament for the Prescott Curley Wolves. The eight-man team had battled adversity throughout the year before reaching the tourney. The Wolves opened against Nashville at Fordyce. They played their best game of the year, giving the Scrappers all they wanted before going down 54-47 and, thereby, getting eliminated from further post season play. Hal Landrith's crew opened the contest with a 14-12 lead after one. Senior leader Barrett Yates netted a pair of three-pointers in the period to propel the Wolves. Prescott extended its lead to 27-23 at the break. However, the second period saw the Wolves pad their tally at the free throw lines. They hit nine of 11 attempts from the charity stripe in the quarter. Numbers began taking their toll on Prescott in the second half, as the Scrappers were able to throw more bodies onto the hardwood than Prescott could. By the end of three, Nashville held a 42-37 lead. Yates' counterpart, Jared McBride led the way in the third with nine points. The Wolves were outscored 12-10 in the final eight minutes, thus ending their season. Yates was the lone Wolf to reach the double-figure plateau, as he scorched the nets for 13, including three treys. Jason Webb followed with nine, while Shaun Vanhook added eight. Carlos Haynie and Brandon Wilson contributed six in the effort, while Shane Pipkin scored five. The Wolves were 17 of 24 from the free throw line. McBride paced Nashville with 17 points to lead all scorers. Willie Henry canned 16. The Scrappers connected on 10 of 21 free throw attempts. Before entering the district tourney, the Wolves hit the court in their final regular season game against Delight Feb. 9. The Bulldogs were able to post a 67-51 win over the Wolves in the contest. Cold shooting in the first period proved to be more than Prescott could overcome, as the Wolves were down 11-6 after one. While the Wolves shot relatively well in the second period, the 'Dogs were red hot and took a 38-20 lead to the lockers at the half. The second half was much closer, but Prescott was unable to overcome Delight's huge second period. Freshman Brandon Wilson led the Wolfpack attack with 16 points. Pipkin contributed an even dozen, while Yates sent 10 through the nylons. Lee Derrick Dixon led all scorers with 18 for the 'Dogs. Carl Morgan followed with 14, while Jackie Harvell had 11 and Derrick Beard scored 10. The Wolves were 14 of 27 at the line, while the 'Dogs converted 14 of 25 free throw attempts.
