Arrests Made; Police Investigate Break-InPublished Wednesday, February 21, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneOne man was arrested and charged with overpossession of alcohol and possession of alcohol without a license Tuesday, Feb. 13. Acting on a tip from a juvenile who had been arrested earlier Tuesday, Nevada County Sheriff Harold Vines worked to get a search warrant for the home of Roy Elliott, 74, of Waldo. Vines obtained the warrant from Judge Duncan Culpepper, and put a raid team together. The team consisted of Vines, criminal investigator Jim Westmoreland, deputy Roy Frazier and auxiliary deputy James Osborne. The warrant was served about 12:15. Officers confiscated 48 12 ounce cans of beer, 20 16 ounce cans of beer, 20 16 ounce cans of malt liquor and six half pints of whiskey. The alcoholic beverages were taken from a refrigerator inside the Elliott home and an outbuilding where Elliott and five other men were allegedly playing dominos and drinking. Elliott was charged with overpossession of alcohol and sale or possession of alcohol without a license. Both are misdemeanor charges. He was released later on bond. "We're committed to fighting the illegal sale of alcohol as well as drugs," Vines said. In other news from the Nevada County Sheriff's Department, two men were arrested in connection with a third degree battery, which occurred Nov. 4, 1995. According to Westmoreland, Todd Avery, 26, of Prescott, and Gary Hendrix, 20, of Prescott were charged with the beating of a 16-year-old Gurdon youth. The youth sustained facial injuries as a result of the beating inflicted by the pair. The assault occurred as the result of an altercation between the three at a party on Rt. 2. The victim was taken to Baptist Medical Center in Arkadelphia and later had to undergo facial surgery. Westmoreland said it has taken so long to make an arrest in the case because of the number of people at the party who had to be interviewed, and because of medical reports needed in the case. The two were charged with third degree battery. This is a class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in the county jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000. Westmoreland is also investigating the burglary of the Y Country Store in Rosston. The burglary occurred between midnight and 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19. Suspect(s) gained entry by breaking out a window in the front door with a large rock. A number of cartons of cigarettes and the cash register were taken in the burglary. Westmoreland asks if anyone saw any person or vehicle around the store at this time to call the Sheriff's Office at 887-2616. A 1991 Honda Accord, stolen in the Dallas, Texas area was found in Nevada County by Sgt. Cleve Barfield of the Arkansas State Police, Friday night. Barfield said he noticed the vehicle cross the center line several times on U.S. 371 in a southerly direction. Thinking the driver may be under the influence, Barfield stopped the car. The driver, Edwin James Crawley, 18, of Shreveport, La., told him the car belonged to his uncle. However, Barfield said things didn't add up, and he ran the car's tags. They came back as having been stolen from a Dallas used car lot. Barfield said Crawley had gone to the lot for a test drive, and drove off with the car before the salesman could get in the passenger's side. Crawley was arrested by Barfield, with the assistance of the Prescott Police Department and NCSO. A female with a 15-month-old baby were also in the car with Crawley. They were released.
