Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, February 21, 1996 in the Gurdon TimesThe students shared a wonderful Valentine's Day -- so many beautiful floral arrangements, balloons, stuffed animals and Luv Pops were delivered. The Beta Club and Student Council would like to thank everyone who supported their sales. The Student Council held an assembly to crown the new GMS King and Queen, Joe Plyler and Andi Calley, representing the seventh grade. First runner-up was fifth grade, Tracey Coplen and Tommy Dickerson; second place was eighth grade, Crystal Simpson and Derek Anderson; and third place was sixth grade, Kyndrian Stafford and Kenard Pegram. Students voted on the candidates of their choice with a penny a vote. This was a fund-raiser for the Student Council as they are working for a new sound system for our school. The Gurdon Junior High Basketball boys' team is the 7AA District champions. Coach Ware acknowledged each team member at the assembly. The tournament trophy was presented to Mr. Alexander. The five starters were on stage to crown Joe and Andi, the new King and Queen. On February 15, Mrs. Childs met with girls in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades who are interested in trying out for cheerleaders. Several girls are looking forward to this challenge. March 15 will be tryout day. The spelling bee winners in order of placement were: Whitney Hogue, Brad Branson, Jake Plyler, Martin Downey and Andrew Wilson. They will represent Gurdon at the Clark County Spelling Bee to be held at our school February 29. Mrs. Downey has worked with these students. Mrs. Clingan's seventh graders have completed their Arkansas Scrapbooks. They have written to all the counties for information. The eighth graders had to plan an 1820 trip out west that will take six months. For a family of four, they had to list each item they would take and the size of container, as the covered wagon was only 10 feet by 5 feet. This was an interesting study, as many students realized many items were not available in 1820 and they are sure glad they did not live during that time period!!
