None Injured In GHS BlastPublished Wednesday, February 21, 1996 in the Gurdon TimesAn explosion ripped through the halls of Gurdon High School Monday, Feb. 12, but, fortunately, there were no injuries. According to Clark County Sheriff Troy Tucker, around 1:10 p.m., four youths apparently ignited a bottle rocket in a .30-.30 shell casing. The casing had been crimped at one end to contain the blast, but still had gunpowder in it. Tucker said when the bottle rocket's fuse was lit, the resulting explosion hurled shrapnel 50 feet in several directions. Pieces of metal were lodged in the school's acoustic ceiling tile. While some students were struck by flying metal fragments, they were apparently far enough away to avoid being injured. Tucker said four people are being charged in the case. D.D. Sheppard and Chris Brown are being charged as adults with criminal mischief. Two others are being charged with criminal mischief in juvenile court. No felony charges are anticipated being filed at this time, Tucker said. What made this "bomb" so dangerous, the sheriff said, is bottle rockets have two types of powder in them. One is a propellant, while the other is an explosive powder. The combination made the "bomb" more powerful, and, therefore, more dangerous. The Clark County Sheriff's Office was notified of the blast by GHS Principal Leonard Gills. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
