Weather Normal In JuneBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, July 7, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune As July opens hot enough to set off fireworks without matches, June was just the opposite. According to John W. Teeter, area meteorologist, the average daily temperature was 77.25 degrees during the month. The highest temperature recorded in June was 92 on the 28th, while the lowest the mercury fell was 57 degrees on June 18th. However, it was an extremely wet month for late spring and early summer. In fact, a total of 7.06 inches of rain fell during the month. The average rainfall for June is 3.99 inches, but the surplus for the sixth month of the year was 3.07 inches. To date, the region has received 35.93 inches of rain since Jan. 1, with the normal amount through June usually 27.64 inches. This puts the area on the positive side by 8.20 inches. Cale weatherman Davis Benton said the southern part of Nevada County saw 2.50 inches of rain during the month, quite a difference from the Prescott area. This brings the total in Cale to 30.58 inches for the year, which, Benton said, is about normal. It rained nine days in June, Teeter said, with the largest single day amount being 2.04 inches on the 10th. One of the more unusual features of this past June, he said, is it rained five straight days, and was followed by eight consecutive days with no rain at all. Then, he added, it rained five more days in a row, followed by another eight with no wet stuff. "For this reason, we didn't experience the wet conditions usually following excess rainfall." No weather records were broken during June, 1999, and, Teeter said, there was only one weather watch or warning posted for the month. This was five less than the norm of six. But, he added, the area did experience thunderstorms on June 8 and 29th. Looking toward July, the average rainfall is 3.85 inches, with the normal average daily temperature being 82.3 degrees. July usually sees four weather watches or warnings. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
