Sheriff Dispels RumorsPublished Wednesday, February 28, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneAccording to rumors, there is no law enforcement in Emmet. Nevada County Sheriff Harold Vines said he doesn't know who's spreading these rumors, but they are not true. A drug and alcohol raid in the community Friday night, along with a cleanup effort by inmates of the Nevada County Jail Saturday should have let residents of Emmet know the truth. "We're patrolling Emmet like we do all other parts of the county," Vines said. "There is an elected constable, James Osborne, there. "We want people to know they have the same law enforcement as other parts of the county have." Vines said Friday night's raid was part of his office's continuing effort to combat the sale of drugs and alcohol to minors in the county. He said Osborne is a big help in the Emmet area, as are the auxiliary deputies, who work the county when they can. "There is no reason for these rumors to have started," he said. "It gets the people upset." Vines said his office has received several phone calls asking why the NCSO is no longer patrolling Emmet. Since Friday's raid, he said, the office has also gotten positive feedback from the community. In addition, Vines had inmates begin picking trash up from the sides of the roads beginning at the county line in Emmet and working toward Prescott. He said he is meeting with mayors throughout the county, asking what kind of projects their communities need to have done the prisoners can do. Vines stressed inmate labor will be used in communities only, and not for individuals. The inmates, he said, can help pick up garbage along the roads, they can clean up cemeteries in the county or whatever else may need to be done. Vines wants the citizens of Emmet to know, though, they are as well protected now as they have ever been since he's been in office. He said his office and deputies will continue working to rid the county of drugs and illegal alcohol to the best of their ability. In fact, Vines said the NCSO would appreciate all the help it could get from citizens who see crimes being committed. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
