All Silent On Issue Of Cable In Rosston

There's still a whole lot of nothing going on as far as cable television in Rosston.

The Rosston City Council, meeting in regular session Thursday, July 1, was informed Community Communications Company, the cable provider, has done nothing as to improving the service to the area.

Rosston Mayor Lewis Jackson told the board Bill Copeland, general manager of CCC, had been called and messages left on his voice mail. However, none have been returned.

Meanwhile, cable television service in Rosston remains woeful.

Copeland met with the council in May, telling what the company would do to try and increase its customer base in Rosston.

He said the system would be revamped completely, with breaks in the cable repaired and more channels added.

The city was given the option of taking the system over and operating it, but, as Jackson said, Rosston doesn't have the money for such a venture.

It has also been pointed out small satellite dishes are inexpensive and offer more programming than cable.

Cable's stronghold has been the ability to provide local news, but recently the laws have been changed to allow some satellite companies to offer network programming.

So, the cable situation in Rosston remains in limbo and will until representatives from CCC contact city officials.

In other business, Jackson said the Rosston Volunteer Fire Department is ready to be inspected. A favorable inspection could result in the department being rated a class 8 instead of a class 9.

This could mean lower insurance premiums to homeowners with their fire policies.

Jackson said the department did get some fire hoses donated from Firestone recently and the department is still looking for a new firetruck.

A new sign has been erected at City Hall, proclaiming the building to be both the City Hall and the RFD offices.

Jackson said this was done in part because of a mistake. Funds had been made available for an air conditioner, but the system was installed at City Hall and not the RFD station.

"When we got the grant," he said, "we didn't realize it was for the fire department."

But, there should be no problem with the grant or air conditioning unit as City Hall can be used by the RFD for training classes.
