Students Build CabinsPublished Wednesday, March 6, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneCharlotte McCauley's social studies class at Prescott Middle School has been studying pioneers and the settlement of the frontier. One pioneer in particular was Daniel Boone, often considered a great pioneer who explored lands west of the Appalachian Mountains and helped to bring settlers there. When the settlers arrived, they found forests to clear, swamps to drain and grasslands to plow. Their homes were made out of logs that were cut from the trees when clearing the forests. They were called log cabins. This class was assigned a project to make a model of a log cabin like the pioneers lived in long ago. The cabins could be made of many different matierals. The students could build their cabin however they wanted and with whatever they could find. It was fun, but hard. The log cabin models are on display outside Mrs. McCauley's classroom. The public may come by to see them. by Tonya Kisner, Brad Glass, Christopher Hunt, Nicole Billingsly and LaSheena Gillard attributed to this story.
