Winston Bryant Seeking U.S. Senate As Democrat

Published Wednesday, March 13, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Arkansas Attorney General Winston Bryant made his candidacy for the United States Senate offical Thursday in a "fly around" of the state with stops in seven cities.

"Washington has lost touch with working people. Everyday working families are being squeezed and they cannot get ahead," Bryant said. "I'll take my small-town values to Washington and I will work to change that."

Bryant, 57, a Democrat is a native of Donaldson, a small town in Hot Spring County. He was elected attorney general in 1990 and re-elected in 1994.

Accompanied with his wife, Susan, Bryant opened the campaign with a breakfast in Malvern followed by stops in El Dorado, Texarkana, Little Rock, Fort Smith, Jonesboro and West Memphis.

In his remarks, Bryant emphasized that just as he had changed the philosophy of the Attorney General's office to be an advocate for the people of Arkansas, rather than just a defense lawyer for state government, he would work to change Washington.

On other issues Bryant said that he supports a balance budget.

"I will work with like-minded Democrats and Republicans to cut government spending, but I refuse to balance the budget by stealing from senior citizens, raising taxes on working families, or mortgaging our grandchildren's future." Bryant said.

Bryant said he also supports:

  • Efforts to require criminals convicted of violent crimes to serve their entire sentence.
  • Enactment of a welfare-reform law that requires able-bodied people to work and impose a time limit on the receipt of benefits.
  • Continuing investments in education for children and support for small businesses that create new jobs.
Bryant said if elected he would introduce a constitutional amendment limiting the terms of federal office holders.

"The voters of Arkansas have chosen to place term limits on state officals, I see no reason why this should not apply to federal officials who forget where they come from," Bryant said. "If you elect me, I will not forget."
