PHS Baseball Team Destroys Competition In Tournament (cont)Published Wednesday, March 13, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayunegs must have thought the skies opened and runs fell from the heavens for Prescott in the bottom of the third as 14 runs scored. Montgomery opened the charge with a single. He followed this with the petty theft of second. Rockett reached first on an error. Montgomery then scored on a wild pitch. Cowling took a free ride to first, moving Johnston, who replaced Rockett, to second. Fulks doubled Johnston and Cowling in. Webb walked and Wingfield reached on an error, scoring Fulks. Cornelius reached on the second consecutive error of the inning, which allowed Webb to go home. Yates, made it three-in-a-row with men reaching on mistakes. This miscue scored Pipkin, who ran for Wingfield, and Cornelius. Stockton was the fourth batter to reach on an error, which scored Yates. The 'Dogs managed to get Montgomery to fly out, but Rockett followed with a single. Cowling grounded out, but Fulks was hit by a pitch. Webb singled, driving in Stockton and Johnston, who ran for Rockett. Wingfield then doubled Fulks and Webb in. Cornelius and Yates walked, with Johnston, getting his chance with a stick, also walking, which scored Pipkin, who replaced Wingfield as a runner. Tucker Baker got in the game, drawing a walk, which scored Cornelius. Brock Jordan ended the deluge by grounding into a fielder's choice with the score 18-1. The 'Dogs manage a lone score in the top of the fourth after Cook, who was hit by a pitch, scored on Jackson's double. The Wolves put the finishing touches on the wounded 'Dogs by sending another seven runners to touch them all in the bottom of the frame, as coach Steve Crow cleared his bench of players. Shane Mowery opened by reaching on an error. Brian Vanhook advanced Mowery by walking. Pipkin, getting a chance to bat, also reached on an error. Jason Koger went down on strikes. Williams is hit by a pitch, scoring Mowery as the bases were jammed with Wolves. Carlos Vanhook singled in his brother Brian. Johnston then reached on an error, bringing Pipkin home. Baker was fanned, but Jordan walked and Williams scored. Wild pitches allowed Vanhook, Johnston and Jordan to complete the circuit around the bases. Mowery walked in his second at-bat of the inning, while Brian Vanhook reached on another Delight error. The 'Dogs were fortunate, however, as Pipkin grounded out to end the devastation, with Prescott leading 25-2. The 'Dogs managed to get two runners around the bases in the top of the fifth, but it was a case of too little, too late as the 10-run rule came into effect as Cowling fanned Jackson to end the game. The Wolves are now in the championship game against host team Gurdon. However, the game was postponed from Friday because of cold weather conditions. It has been rescheduled for March 13 at 4 p.m. The Wolves-Go-Devil game originally scheduled for March 25 has been moved to April 3 because it conflicted with Prescott's Spring Break. The Wolves will be on the road to Fouke March 15 in their next outing, and will open play at the Johnson Sports Complex March 18 with a date against Hot Springs Lakeside. From there, the Wolves will make the short trip to Nevada and tangle with the Bluejays March 19. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
