Saturday At Nevada Co. FairgroundsPublished Wednesday, March 13, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneThis coming Saturday the Arkansas Hereford Association will have a Hereford show in Prescott at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. This is the first time the annual event has been held in Prescott. The show, featuring polled and horned Herefords, will begin at 9:00 a.m. It is expected to be over before noon, according to Mrs. James Owen of Willisville. The Owen family, along with Bob Tolley and Charles Andrews of Camden, are the ones instrumental in getting the show in Prescott. Ned Ray Purtle of Hope will be the judge. Bulls, cows, heifers and steers will be included in the show. All the stock will be registered. The show will be open, which means that juniors and adults may show their registered Herefords. The public is invited. Prizes for the show will be trophies and jackets to the high point winners. Visitors from across the state will pour into Prescott Friday night in preparation for the show on Saturday. In addition, the Arkansas Hereford Association board of directors will hold a board meeting on Friday night during a special barbecue supper for the group. That barbecue, for members only, will also be held at the fairgrounds. Around 60 people are expected to attend the barbecue. President of the board is David Tankerley of Elkins. West Hudson is vice president and Bill Hamm is secretary-treasurer. Tankersley will auction sponsorship for the Arkansas Junior Hereford Show, which will be held this fall. The sponorship has to purchase the prizes for that particular show. The site for this show has not been announced. Several shows are held throughout the year, on the local, district and then the state level. Mrs. Owen said the primary goal of the Arkansas Hereford Association is to promote Hereford cattle, horned and polled, in Arkansas and the ability to convert forage into meat. The Owen family is Nevada County's current Farm Family of the Year. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
