Published Wednesday, March 20, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Nevada's Bluejay baseball team boasts a 3-1 record on the diamond so far this season.

The Jays were dropped in their season opener against Stamps with a 9-0 pasting.

The Jays were only able to record three hits in the contest, as T. Key, M. Holt and W. McKamie all singled.

On a more positive note, however, Jay pitching fanned 14 members of the Stamps team.

The Jays rebounded in their next outing, a 7-4 win over Hampton in the Norphlet Tournament.

Shane Free was the winning pitcher for the Nevada nine.

The Jays relied on a big second inning as Tony Key, Hagan Barnes, Todd Evans, Free, Matt Hold and Jeremy Keetz all scored. Nevada's final run came in the fourth when Evans scored his second run of the game.

Blevins was the next victim as the Jays offense came to life.

The Nevada squad blasted the Hornets 24-9, with Cody Hastings getting the win.

Free and Evans belted round-trippers for the Jays in the contest.

Nevada scored two in the first, was blanked in the second, sent seven around the paths in the third, added 10 in the fourth, had another five score in the fifth.

The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Blevins scored once in the first, another solo run in the second, four in the third, once in the fourth and another lone run in the bottom of the fifth.

In this contest, Holt was three of four at the plate, scoring three times. Key went two for four at the plate, with two runs scored. Evans was one out of four with three runs.

Free managed three hits in five at-bats and scored twice. Barnes was perfect, going four of four, with four runs scored. Wesley McKamie was 0-1, while Jimmy Bailey was one of two with two runs scored.

Cody Hastings made two trips to the plate, recorded two hits, but scored four runs as he was utilized as a pinch runner.

Mike Lowe was blanked in one at-bat, while Young was one-for-one, with four runs scored. David Lively was one of three, and scored once.

The Jays ran their record to 3-1 after a hard-fought 5-2 victory over Stephens Thursday, March 14.

Stephens scored twice in the first inning, but was shut out for the remainder of the game, as Jay pitching settled down.

Nevada scored in the second when Barnes circled the bases. The Jays added two in the fourth and an insurance pair in the fifth for the win.

Brett Wicker picked up the win for Nevada.

The Jays have a Friday, March 22 date with Lewisville, with the game scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
