Published Wednesday, March 20, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Prescott's Curley Wolf baseball team posted a 2-1 record on the week.

The Wolves pounded Blevins Monday, March 11, 20-7 and humiliated Gurdon Wednesday, March 13, 18-7, before going down to Fouke 11-5 Friday.

The Wolves made the short trip to Blevins Monday for their third game of the season.

Neither team was able to push a man across the plate in the opening frame, but the Hornets broke through in the bottom of the second as they touched hurler Ben Jones for three.

Jones sent the first two batters back to the pine quickly, but walked the third man up. He was then tagged for back-to-back singles, which scored Bristow. Steed reached on an error, and when Bristow singled, two other runners scored.

Prescott responded in the top of the fourth with a quartet of runs, while holding the Hornets at bay.

Ross Cowling opened the frame with a single. Jason Webb fanned. John Cornelius walked to put runners at first and second. Barrett Yates went down swinging for the second out.

Then the bats heated up. Jamie Williams singled, scoring Cowling and Cornelius. Montra Montgomery followed with a solid double, driving in Williams. Charlie Rockett was hit by a pitch. Jerome Fulks struck out, but the pitch was wild and runners advanced. Al Johnston, running for Jones, also scored on the play. Cowling ended the inning by grounding out.

Blevins went down in order.

The Wolves offense exploded in the top of the fifth as 12 men touched them all, and, for all intents and purposes, put the game out of reach.

The rain of runs began with Webb reaching on an error. This was followed by Cornelius getting a free pass to first. Yates, on a bad day, fanned. Williams, however, singled Webb and Cornelius home. Jones drew a walk and was replaced on first by Johnston. Montgomery singled, as did Rockett. Williams and Johnston scored on Rockett's single.

Shane Pipkin replaced Rockett on the paths, and advanced when Fulks singled. Fulks recorded an RBI as he drove Montgomery in. Cowling had an RBI with a single scoring Pipkin. Webb drew a free pass before Cornelius singles, scoring Fulks.

Yates warmed up with a double to score Cowling and Webb. Yates and Cornelius scored when Williams singles. Williams was gunned down trying to stretch a single into a two-bagger.

But the onslaught continued as Jones singles. Montgomery was hit by a pitch and Rockett walked. Johnston replaced Jones on the bases again and scored when Fulks singled, again. The inning ended with Cowling going down on strikes.

Blevins scored one in the fourth and three in the fifth, but the Wolves added four in the top of the fifth as well.

In Prescott's fifth, Webb started off by flying out. Cornelius walked and Yates singles. Williams also walked and a wild pitch allowed Cornelius and Yates to score. Jones doubled Williams home.

Montgomery was fanned, Rockett walked and Fulks reached on an error to load the bases. Jones scored on a wild pitch, but the frame was closed out when Rockett was tagged trying to score on the pitch as well.

The game was called after the third Hornet went down in the fifth because of the 10-run rule.

Jones was the winning pitcher for the game, going all five frames, facing 30 batters, fanning eight, walking 12, giving up three hits and being charged with all seven runs.

The Wolves made their second road trip of the week Wednesday to play in the title game of the Gurdon Tournament.

For the first time this season, the game lasted all seven innings before the Wolves cooled the Go-Devils 18-7.

Yates opened the game by flying out. Williams reached base on an error and promptly stole second. Jones also flied out. Montgomery singled Williams home.

Rockett took one deep, but was robbed of a home run when the umpire said the ball bounced over the fence. Instead of a homer, Rockett had to settle for a ground-rule double. Fulks flied out to end the inning.

Cliff Hunter opened Gurdon's portion of the first with a walk. He then stole second as Tony Gatlin fanned. Hayes grounded out and Brian McGalliard ended the frame being fanned.

The Wolves were unable to score in the second, but Gurdon tied the score.

Thomas went down swinging for the Devils, but Wade Griffin singled. Josh Griffin followed by fanning for the second out. Kenny Hughes singled Griffin home. Hunter walked but Gatlin was fanned to end the inning.

The Wolves scored again in the top of the third as Williams singled and stole second. Jones flied out. Montgomery walked and both runners advance on a wild pitch. Rockett grounded out, but scored Williams. Fulks ended the inning by flying out.

The Devils fought back to take the lead with a trio of runs in the bottom of the inning.

Hayes got things started with a single. This was followed by a groundout by McGalliard. Thomas was issued a free pass and W. Griffin doubled Hayes in. Thomas scored on a wild pick off attempt by the catch at third base.

J. Griffin grounded into a fielder's choice, with brother Wade scoring. Josh Griffin fanned and Hughes and Hunter both walked. Gatlin ended the inning going down on strikes.

Offense has been the name of the game for Prescott and it showed in the top of the fourth as five runs scored.

Cowling and Webb walked to get the inning going. Cornelius doubled both in. Yates reached on an error and Williams hit into a fielder's choice. Cornelius was tagged out at the plate.

Jones walked and Montgomery grounded out, but drove Yates in. Rockett walked and Fulks singled, bringing Williams and Jones in. Cowling grounded out to end the inning.

Gurdon, however, wasn't done, and the Devils pushed two more runs across the plate in their part of the fourth.

Hayes, McGalliard and Thomas all walked to load the bases. W. Griffin flied out and J. Griffin was fanned. Josh Griffin walked Hayes in. Hughes earned an RBI by walking McGalliard in. Hunter ended the threat by striking out.

Three more runs were registered on Prescott's side of the scoreboard in the fifth.

Webb was fanned to start the inning and Cornelius walked. Carlos Vanhook grounded into a fielder's choice, with Cornelius being tagged out at home again. Williams followed with a double, scoring Vanhook, and the bases were cleared when Jones took one deep. Montgomery grounded out to end the inning.

Gurdon managed to add its final run to its tally in the bottom of the frame.

Gatlin walked to start the Devil fifth. Hayes and McGalliard flied out. Gatlin, who advanced on the fly-outs, scored on a wild pick-off attempt. Thomas was fanned to end the inning.

The Wolves were through toying around with Gurdon, and it showed in the sixth as six runners circled the base paths.

Rockett ripped a single and was replaced on first by Pipkin. Fulks s
