Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, March 20, 1996 in the Gurdon Times

We have been enjoying a week of spring break, but we will be eagerly ready to get back into the "swing of things" Monday. It is difficult for us to believe that we have started the fourth nine weeks period for this school year, but as the saying goes, "Time seems to fly when you are having fun."

Parent-teacher conferences were held March 14 with a good attendance. We look forward to the opportunity to share the progress of a student with their parents. Parents are always invited to call the school and make an appointment with teachers when they believe it is necessary. Several Student Council members, Whitney Hogue, Mary Lee, Kenard Pilgram, Susan Mosely, J.T. Tarpley, Andrew Wilson, Patrick Stone and Justin Smith, served as hosts and hostesses during the evening.

The Division II OM team, sponsored by Mrs. Downey, placed second place in the district and will now complete in the state competition in April. Martin Downey, Patrick Stone, Crystal Simpson, Whitney Hogue and Jessica Guthrie were the team members. They had work many long hours after school and will continue to improve as they prepare for the state.

The Junior High Beta students attended a play, Charlotte's Web, in Little Rock March 12 and they had a wonderful, exciting lunch at Chili's. Mrs. Karr and Mrs. Bullard, sponsors, and coach Kizer accompanied the students on the trip.

Teachers spent the day Friday, March 15, working on the COE planning program, as the students did not attend school that day. Tuesday, March 26, school will dismiss at 2:00 for teacher inservice. This will be two hours devoted to the COE program. Parents and teachers are working together in committees as progress is being made in the target selection, goals, and actions to be taken that all relate to the school mission.

Monday, April 1, our school will sponsor a `millage rally' at 6:30. This will be a question and answer time concerning the purposed millage that would provide a new middle school at the location of the high school on Highway 67 South. The rally will be in the media center of the middle school. The PTM will meet at 7:00 and we encourage all parents to attend. The home room that has the most parents, grandparents or guardians to attend will receive a surprise, and they all want to win. We will look forward to seeing you.

Our secretary, Mrs. Gattis, had the big birthday last week. She was certainly surprised to find all the students in the auditoridum who greeted her with moaning and crying sounds to help her celebrate the big 40. Mrs. Roe had several presents to present to her, such as glasses to see better, bouquet of flowers that were more dead than alive, bouquet of black balloons, and a list of 101 things that indicate getting old. Mrs. Clingan crowned Mrs. Gattis with a black crown with 40 in the front, and she read a poem written for the special occasion. We were all concerned about the fire, but realized it was the candles on the cake!!!

Mrs. Clingan's homeroom surprised her with a birthday cake and the trimmings. Her day would occur during spring break, so they really surprised her, even to the point that she did not know what to say, and believe me that doesn't happen often.

We appreciate the support you give to us and we ask that you continue. Hope to see you at the millage rally April 1, as we all work together to make those Classy Moments at GMS.
