Timetable Set For AnnexationBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, July 7, 1999 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon's annexation issue will come to a vote of the people on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999. However, the city has a tight schedule it must meet before the election can be held. The first step in the process was getting the third reading of the annexation ordinance passed by the Gurdon City Council. This was done Monday, June 28. Tuesday, June 29, the city sent a certified copy of the ordinance, along with a map of the proposed area for annexation to the Clark County Clerk and Clark County Election Commission. A notice of the election has been published in the local paper, with the city to provide a list of people in the annex area to the county clerk by Monday, July 12. Then the fun begins for real. By Wednesday, Aug. 11, the county clerk must give notice of voter registration by mail to those in the affected area. The soonest the election could have been held was Saturday, Aug. 28, but it was decided to wait and have it Tuesday, Aug. 31. If the issue fails, this will be the end of the annexation measure. However, should it succeed an ordinance must attach the land brought into the city limits to adjoining wards for voting purposes no later than Monday, Sept. 13. Thirty days later, on Wednesday, Oct. 13, the county clerk must be given notice of voter precinct assignments, so the residents who have reached the age of majority will know where they are to vote, and in which ward they are casting their ballots.
