Published Wednesday, March 27, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Lakeside took Prescott a full seven innings before falling 5-1 in baseball action Wednesday, March 20.

During the week, the Diamond Wolves again posted a 2-1 record, with wins over Hot Springs Lakeside, and New Boston, Texas' junior varsity team, 20-1 in the Fouke Tournament, and getting clipped by Texas High School's jv team 2-0 in the Fouke Tournament.

Barrett Yates spent three innings on the hill against the Lakeside Rams, facing 13 men, fanning four, giving up no walks, allowing three hits and one run.

Ben Jones took over for Yates, going two, facing nine, striking five out, walking three and giving up no hits or runs.

Ross Cowling finished the final two frames, challenging 10 batters, striking four out, walking three and allowing two hits and no runs.

The game, played at the Johnson Sports Complex, began with Plumlee going down on strikes for Lakeside.

Coon also fanned, but reached first when the pitch got away from the catcher. Smith singled Coon to second.

Kuhn then went down on strikes before Combs grounded into a fielder's choice that saw Coon forced at third.

The Wolves got on the board early as Yates opened Prescott's portion of the first with a single. He was replaced on the base paths by Al Johnston, who scored when Jamie Williams singled.

Williams attempted to stretch a single into a double and was gunned down at second.

Ben Jones singled, but was left stranded when Montra Montgomery flied out and Charlie Rockett went down swinging.

It was three up and three down for the Rams as all three batters grounded out.

The Wolves, however, added two to their tally to go up 3-0.

Jerome Fulks started with a single and scored when Cowling tripled. Webb flied out, but Cowling scored on the sacrifice.

John Cornelius flied out and Yates grounded out to end the inning.

Lakeside fired its lone offensive salve on the top of the third.

Thomas was fanned before Plumlee doubled. Coon grounded out, but Smith singled Plumlee in. Kuhn ended the frame by grounding out.

Prescott's side was retired in order as Williams and Jones were fanned and Montgomery grounded out.

Four Rams went to the plate in the top of the fourth, with three going down on strikes. The other was walked.

The scenario was pretty much the same in Prescott's part of the fourth as Rockett flied out. Fulks went down on strikes. Cowling reached on an error, but was left when Webb grounded out.

Lakeside was blanked again in the fifth, though two men got on board with walks. However, the Prescott pitching kept Ram bats silent and the two were left.

The Wolves, on the other hand, added another run to their total in the bottom of the inning.

Cornelius struck out to open the frame, but Yates walked. Williams then went down on strikes before Jones singled Yates in. Montgomery was fanned to retire the side.

Cowling gave up one of his two hits in the top of the sixth, along with a pair of walks, but that was all he gave up as the Rams were held in check.

Just to show they could, the Wolves added a final insurance run in the bottom of the inning.

Rockett grounded out as the first man up. Fulks singled, but was picked off trying to steal second. Cowling reached on an error and was replaced on first by Johnston.

Webb reached on an error, which allowed Johnston to score an unearned run. Jimmy Stockton grounded out for the final out.

In the seventh, Coon walked to get things started. Smith was fanned but Kuhn singled. Combs struck out and the game ended when Coon was tagged out at the plate trying to score on a wild pitch.

From there, the Wolves made the trip to Fouke to play in the Panther's tourney Friday. Here, the Prescott nine tasted defeat for only the second time this season as they went down 2-0 to Texarkana, Texas High's junior varsity squad.

Yates again took to the hill for the Wolves and allowed only one hit in three frames. He faced 10 batters, fanned two, walked none and allowed no score.

He was replaced by Cowling, who went one inning, faced four, fanned two, walked one and gave up one run, though allowing no hits.

Jones took the loss as he went the final two frames, went up against 10 men, struck one out, walked one, gave up two hits and one run.

For the most part, however, it was a pitcher's duel.

Yates opened the contest with a single, but was left as Williams, Jones and Montgomery were fanned.

Yates was tagged for his lone hit as Driver opened the Tiger's part of the first with a single. Spencer reached first on a fielder's choice, which saw Driver caught as second. Hamlin flied out and Duece grounded out to end the threat.

Rockett went down on strikes in the second. Fulks also fanned, but reached first when the ball got away from the catcher. He then stole second to get in scoring position, but was picked off shortly thereafter. The inning ended with Cowling striking out.

It was three and out for Texarkana as well, with Astro flying out and the next two grounding out.

But, the Wolves could do no damage in the top of the third as Webb, Cornelius and Yates were all fanned.

The third saw THS go three and out as well.

Prescott mounted a threat in the top of the fourth after Williams struck out.

Jones walked and promptly stole second and third. Montgomery reached first on a fielder's choice, but the fielder chose to gun Jones down at home. Montgomery was then caught trying to steal second.

The Tigers scored the only run they would need in their half the frame.

For a while, though, it looked like the Wolves would get out of the fourth with no harm done as Spencer flied out and Hamlin grounded out. But the Tigers mounted a two-out rally.

Duece singled and Astro walked Farren loaded the bases after he was hit by a pitch.

Gibson reached on a fielder's choice, but the ball was dropped by the Wolves' second baseman while trying to force Farren. Duece scored on an error. Roa ended things by grounding out.

Rockett gave the Wolves a brief chance in the fifth as he singled. The scoring opportunity was limited as he attempted to stretch the single into a two-bagger. Fulks and Cowling went down on strikes.

Smith grounded out to start THS's fifth. Driver was fanned before Spencer singled. However, Spencer was cut down by Rockett when he attempted to steal second to end the inning.

Webb opened the sixth by flying out. Stockton, however, doubled to get in scoring position. Unfortunately, he was left at second as Yates and Williams each grounded out.

The Tigers scored an insurance run in the bottom of the frame as Hamlin started by striking out. Duece walked and stole second.

Astro hit the ball in front of home plate, and the ball was overt
