Several Political Races Contested In County

Published Wednesday, April 3, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Filing period for all county offices, and city alderman positions started at noon Tuesday, March 19.

Since this time, there have been 38 city and county residents toss their hats into the political arena.

As the filing deadline nears, more and more races are becoming contested.

One of the most heated races will likely be for Nevada County Sheriff and Collector. Three men have filed for this position: incumbent Harold Vines; Steve Otwell; and Themious Lindsey.

Two have filed for Nevada County Circuit Clerk: incumbent Carolyn Steed; and her challenger, Mary Vines.

Donna Wingfield has issued a challenge to Vernon Meeks for the Ward 4 Position 2 slot on Prescott's City Council. This post is currently held by Meeks' brother Leo, who is not running.

Dick Bright has filed for reelection as alderman in Ward 1 Position 2; Ann Stockton is seeking election as alderman in Ward 3 Position 2; and James Ray Cornelius is hoping for the seat as alderman in Ward 4 Position 1. Steve Crow has also filed for reelection for his slot in Ward 1 Position 1, while Danny Beavert is seeking another term from Ward 2 Position 2. Karen Ward is running for the Ward 3 Position 1 seat on the council. Benny Trevillion is seeking another term as the alderman from Ward 2 Position 1.

Seven candidates have filed for Justice of the Peace seats. Curtis Johnson has filed for reelection in District 4, while Adron Hicks has filed for District 7 Position 2. Leo Holleman is seeking another two years as JP in District 6, while Gary Lewis is running as the incumbent from District 1. John K. Henderson is running in District 5. Willie Wilson is seeking the seat in JP District 2. Danny Miller is running for the post from District 3.

Larry Miller is running for Constable in the Taylor Township, while James Williams wants to be the Constable in the Missouri Township. James Osborne hopes to remain Constable in the Emmet Township. Danny Martin is seeking the slot as the Constable from the Caney Township. Al J. Plyler is running for the Constable slot in the District 3 region.

Sydney DuCharme, so far, is the only candidate to file for the Nevada County Treasurer's position.

Barbara Butler has filed for reelection at Nevada County Tax Assessor.

Scott Logue has tossed his hat into the ring for Nevada County Coroner. He will be challenged by Dennis Ray Collins, who also seeks the post, currently held by Ricky Burke.

And, while three men have announced their intention to run for the position of Nevada County Judge, only James Roy Brown and Coach Jack House have officially filed for the office.

Sydney and Delbert DuCharme have also filed as candidates to the 1996 State Democratic Convention.

The filing period ended at noon Tuesday, April 2 for those people who plan on running on a party ticket.

Independent candidates, however, have until May 1 to get their petitions turned in to the County Clerk's Office.

Those seeking to run as Independents must procure the signatures of 3 percent of those registered voters who voted in the last governor's race in the county, according to Julie Stockton, Nevada County Clerk.
