Stone Attends Conservation WorkshopPublished Wednesday, July 14, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesGurdon High School agriculture teacher Stacy Stone recently attended a week-long Teacher Conservation Workshop (TCW) at Heifer Project International in Perryville on a full scholarship from the Ross Foundation in Arkadelphia. Sponsored by the Arkansas Forestry Association Education Foundation (AFAEF), TCW is a practical workshop that emphasizes the importance of conserving Arkansas' natural resources with special attention to forest resources and forest products. "The major purpose of TCW is to show that the environmental, economic and cultural well-being of Arkansas can be significantly enhanced if its natural resources are properly managed," said Mary Ann Halsey, AFAEF director of forestry education. Stone was selected to attend the workshop based on the enthusiasm he exhibits in the classroom, as well as his ability to integrate conservation into his instruction. Participation in TCW provided Stone with three hours of graduate credit from Arkansas Tech University. Workshop participants also received training in the award-winning environmental education program Project Learning Tree. AFAEF is a non-profit corporation dedicated to forestry education in Arkansas. Its mission is to educate students, teachers and the general public about the importance of forests to the state's economy and the need for proper forest management to ensure that Arkansas' forests are growing for the future.
