Softball JV Team Wins First GamePublished Wednesday, April 10, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayunePrescott's Wolverette softball team has been taking it on the chin in its first year of existence. While the varsity squad is winless, playing against more experienced teams, the junior varsity managed its first win last week. The senior team, though, tangled with DeQueen Monday, April 1, falling 21-0 in their first game after spring break. The Lady Leopards opened strong and remained that way as they scored four in the first, six in the second, three in the third, two more in the fourth and an additional six in the fifth. The game was called after five frames because of the 10-run rule. Though the Wolverettes were unable to send a runner around the circuit, the team was able to hit well. Mandy Cox singled twice, while Lakisha Stuckey, Kaci Ammons, Shannon Chambliss and Christy Martin all connected for one-baggers. The jv team also faltered 17-0 against DeQueen, in a game called after three innings. In that contest, Jill Stokes and Melinda McGough doubled, while Laura Grayson, Amber Arney, Kellie Ashbrook, Ashley Stewart and Commanito Harris all singled. The Wolverettes played better in their game against Murfreesboro Tuesday, but the end result was pretty much the same as they went down 16-0 in senior action. The Lady Rattlers scored one in the first, four in the second, six in the fourth and five more in the fifth and final inning. Steward smacked a double and single for the Prescott crew. Tamara Marlar and Laura Culpepper belted twin singles, while Cox, Satarria Dixon and Lori Burke all singled. In the jv game, the Lady Rattlers were victorious 16-2. Murfreesboro scored four in the first, three in the third, two in the fourth and had a seven-run fifth. Ashbrook and Jesse Ward both singled and scored for Prescott. Gladies Gulley and McGough both doubled, while Stokes and Grayson singled twice each. Arney, and Martin also belted singles. The next outing was against the Lady Scrappers of Nashville. Though losing, the Wolverettes were able to score some runs in the varsity game, as they went down 17-3. All three of Prescott's runs came in the first inning. Nashville sent five around in the first, three in the second, eight in the third and one in the fifth. Jesna Cornelius, Dixon and Harris all singled and scored for Prescott. Gulley doubled, while Ammons and Chambliss singled. The jv team posted its first win, an 18-12 thriller against the pumpkinheads of Nashville. The Wolverettes took a 5-4 lead after one, but were tied 6-6 at the end of two. Nashville took the lead at 9-6 when the third frame was over, but saw the game get out of control as Prescott sent 11 runners around the circuit in the fourth. The Wolverettes capped their scoring with one in the fifth. Nashville scored once in the fourth and twice in the bottom of the fifth. Marlar almost batted for the cycle as she singled twice, doubled and tripled. She also scored three times. Martin had a single and double in her three run day, while Ashbrook circled the bases three times and singled four. Stokes singled and scored in the contest, while Kelly Wren scored twice. McGough singled twice, doubled and scored, with Gulley getting two runs and one single. Ward singled, as did Arney. Heather McLelland scored in the game as well. "We're still working on the fundamentals," coach Cecily Butler said. "They're learning and getting better. "Our indecisiveness and inexperience hurts us." The Wolverettes are scheduled to play in the Fouke Tournament April 12-13. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
