Curley Wolves Squad Runner-Up At Doc Walker Track Meet In Texarkana

Published Wednesday, April 10, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

In spite of being in class only one day for over two weeks, most of the Wolves track squad re-grouped after the fire and competed very well at the "Doc Walker" Hog Relays in Texarkana last Thursday.

As well as competing against Roderick Johnson and the Stamps Yellowjackets, the Wolves had to battle more winter weather, injuries to key personnel and they were not in full force because of more conflicts in scheduling never before experienced in the spring sports season at PHS.

Nevertheless, coach Eddie Jackson said the dedicated Wolves did their best and came away with a very nice runner-up plaque and qualifed for state in two events.

In qualifying for these events, John Cornelius and his relay teammates J. Rashad, B. Chaning and C.D. Flemons also broke meet records in the 800-run and 4x400 relay.

Another meet highlight was the performance of sophomore Jason Morrow. He scored 23 points as he won the poll vault and 1600-run and scored in the 400- and 3200-meter runs.

Listed below are the scoring events from the Wolves.

110-meter hurdles: Channing Butler, first place; and Rashad Johnson, fifth place;

100-meter dash: John Cornelius, fourth place;

1600-meter run: Jason Morrow, first place;

400-meter run: Jason Morrow, fifth place;

300-intermediate hurdles: Channing Butler, third place;

800-meter run: John Cornelius, first place (meet record, personal record and state qualified);

4x800-relay: J. Williams, E. Barzar, Jeremy Morrow, Carlos Haynie, fourth place;

3200-meter run: Jason Morrow, sixth place;

4x400-relay: J. Cornelius, R. Johnson, C.D. Flemons and C. Butler, first place (meet record, state qualified 3:31.1);

Discus: T. Burton, fourth place;

Long jump: R. Johnson, third place;

Pole vault: Jason Morrow, first place; Eddie Fain, second place; Jason Kisselburg, third place; and

High jump: C.D. Flemons, third place.

The man's relay team were well on their way to qualifying for state in the 4x200-relay, but a mishap on the third exchange caused a dropped baton and injury to C.D. Flemons and Channing Butler.

True to their competitive spirit these athletes came back after medical attention and finished the meet and performed as well as could be expected, Jackson said.
