Curley Wolves Baseball Team Wins First Conference Game (cont)Published Wednesday, April 10, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayuneowever, flied out to end the inning. The Wolves were incensed and scored five more to ice the game once and for all. Cowling singled and went to second when Cornelius walked. Webb singled Cowling in. Yates singled Cornelius in. Fulks singled to load the bases. Webb went home on Jones' sacrifice fly. Montgomery singled Yates and Fulks in. Rockett went down on strikes. Williams walked and Cowling ripped a shot back to the pitcher. Montgomery, who was headed home, reversed his field but was nailed at third. Still, Prescott held a 12-4 lead. The Devils added one in the top of the fourth. McMillan was the first out on strikes. Hunter and Gatlin both singled. Hayes hit into a fielder's choice, which allowed Hunter to score as Gatlin was forced at second. McGalliard and Rhodes walked to load the bases, but Prescott got out of the inning with no more damage as W. Griffin flied out. But the Wolves' offense wasn't through. They added two more in their half of the fourth. Cornelius walked. He was able to stroll home leisurely as Webb connected on his second homer of the season. Yates and Fulks single to put runners at first and second. Jones lined to second and Yates was doubled up on the play. Montgomery struck out to end the inning. Gurdon continued to fight back though, as the Devils added one more in the fifth. The first two batters went down easily. With two down, though, McMillan homered. Hunter walked, but was left on first when Gatlin grounded out. Prescott scored its final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Rockett singled and was replaced on first by Pipkin. Jimmy Stockton singled, but Pipkin wound up getting picked off at second. Brian Vanhook walked and Carlos Vanhook struck out. Johnston walked to load the bases. Stockton scored on a wild pitch and Brian Vanhook was tagged out at home trying to score after the throw back to the mound was wild. Gurdon fired its final salvo in the top of the sixth. Hayes doubled and scored when McGalliard reached on an error. From there, the Wolf defense took command and sent Devils back to the dugout. Jones was able to record a single and pad his stats in the Prescott part of the sixth. Otherwise, the Wolves were unable to score. McMillan walked in the top of the seventh, but Cowling fanned the next three batters to end the game. The Wolves are now 7-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. Prescott's game against Delight April 11 has been cancelled. The Wolves will return to the diamond Wednesday April 17 against Delight. However, the game was originally scheduled to be played there, but has been changed to the Johnson Sports Complex. The Wolves will travel to Stamps Friday with the first game of the doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. The game scheduled against Fordyce on April 5 was rained out and has been moved to April 24 at 3:30, in Prescott.
