Curley Wolves Baseball Team Wins First Conference Game

Published Wednesday, April 10, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Two games last week ended up in two more wins for the Prescott Curley Wolf baseball team.

This time, cross-county rival Nevada and league foe Gurdon were the two victims.

Steve Crow, coach of the Diamond Wolves, got his team off to a good start Monday, April 1, with a 9-3 win over Nevada.

Barrett Yates spent three frames on the hill in recording his fourth straight win. Yates faced 11 batters, walked one, allowed one hit, no runs and three went down in flames.

Ross Cowling took over for three innings, taking on 15 batters, giving up no hits, but walking five. Cowling allowed one run and fanned six.

Matt Wingfield went to the hill in the seventh. He pitched to eight batters, gave up one hit, four walks and two runs, along with recording two Ks.

Hastings was the losing pitcher for Nevada. In six frames, he faced 33 hitters, gave up 12 hits, three walks, nine runs and fanned six.

The Blue Jays opened well as they threatened in the first. Barnes walked before Holt flied out. Barnes went to third on a double by Evans. Young grounded out and the inning ended with Barnes trying to score and getting gunned down at the plate.

The Wolves struck early as Yates smacked a solid single as the first batter up. Jerome Fulks reached on an error, which saw Yates score.

Ben Jones grounded out, but Montra Montgomery doubled Fulks in. Charlie Rockett was the second out on a grounder before Jamie Williams singled Montgomery in. Williams was caught trying to steal second.

It was three up and three down for the Jays as Yates had their number in the second.

The Wolves, on the other hand, added a pair to their total. Cowling opened with a long fly which was caught.

John Cornelius followed with a single. Jason Webb walked, moving Cornelius to second. Yates flied out, but Fulks again reached on an error, which allowed Cornelius to score.

The error allowed Webb to reach third. He scored when Fulks stole second and the throw went toward Fulks. Jones's fly ended the inning.

Four batters went up in the third, with three returning to the dugout, as the Jays were unable to mount much of an offensive attack.

For a change, however, the Wolves didn't score in the frame either.

Montgomery singled but was caught trying to steal. Rockett also singled, but was stranded when Williams and Cowling fanned.

The Jays scored one of their three runs in the top of the fourth.

Evans went down on strikes before Young was hit by a pitch. Lively fanned and Bailey walked, moving Young to second.

Young then stole third and scored when the throw from the catcher went into left field. McKamie walked, but he and Bailey were left when Hastings struck out.

Prescott padded its lead with a pair in the bottom of the frame.

Cornelius opened with a single before Webb struck out. Yates belted a solid single to drive Cornelius home.

Fulks and Jones singled to fill the bags and Yates scored when Montgomery flied out. The frame ended with Rockett going down in flames as well.

The fifth was a quiet inning for both teams as neither was able to do much offensively.

However, the sixth was different. The Jays were able to load the bases, but couldn't bring anyone home.

Evans, Bailey and McKamie all walked to fill the bags, but Young and Lowe were fanned and Hastings grounded out to spoil the threat.

The Wolves got another pair in the bottom of the sixth, starting with Yates' third round-tripper of the season.

Fulks singled and Jones walked, to move Fulks into scoring position. Montgomery belted a sacrifice fly to advance Fulks to third. He scored when Rockett grounded out. Williams' fly ball ended the frame.

Nevada managed two in the top of the seventh.

Kretz and Barnes walked. Holt was fanned, but Evans got a free ride to again load the bases. Lowe singled Kretz in. Bailey got an easy RBI by walking Barnes in. McKamie was fanned to end the game.

The junior varsity game wasn't even close as Prescott posted a 26-1 thrashing of the young Jays.

Shane Pipkin recorded four runs on four hits, including a double and triple. Jim Stockton singled and scored four times. Al Johnston circled the bases four times on a pair of doubles. Matt Wingfield scored three times and had a single. Brian Vanhook scored three times, belted a four-bagger and twin singles. Ben Jones doubled, singled and scored four runs. Sane Mowery scored in the game, as did Jason Koger. Tucker Baker had two runs.

Wednesday saw the Wolves open league play with a 15-7 win over arch-rival Gurdon.

Yates, pitching on one day's rest, went to 5-0 on the season. In three innings, he faced 17, gave up five hits, one walk, four runs and recorded four Ks.

Jones took over on the hill for three, taking on 18 batters, giving up four hits, three walks and three runs. He fanned one.

Cowling also got into the foray with one inning. He pitched to four men, gave up no hits, walked run and fanned everyone else.

Jim Ed Hayes was the losing pitcher for Gurdon.

Cliff Hunter opened the game by going deep on Yates for the first run. Tony Gatlin then grounded out and Hayes was fanned. Brian McGalliard reached on an error, but Jeff Rhodes struck out to end the inning.

The Wolves got this run back along with two more as Yates opened with a single. He was replaced on the bases by Johnston as a pinch runner.

Fulks walked Johnston to second. Jones went down swinging and Johnston stole third. He scored on a passed ball.

Montgomery singled Fulks in. Rockett was hit by a pitch to put men on first and second. Williams fanned for out two. Cowling singled Montgomery in, but was left stranded with Rockett when Cornelius fanned.

The Go-Devils cut into Prescott's lead with a run in the top of the second.

Wade Griffin grounded out, and N. Griffin struck out. Josh Griffin walked. Paul McMillan singled. Hunter's single brought J. Griffin in. The frame ended with Gatlin flying out.

Close didn't cut it for the Wolves as they started putting the game out of reach with four in their half of the inning.

Webb went down on strikes. Yates doubled and was again replaced by Johnston on the bags. Fulks ripped an RBI single scoring Johnston.

Jones follows with a triple to bring Fulks home. Jones came in when Montgomery singles. Rockett grounded out, but Montgomery was able to score. Williams smacked a grounder to end the assault.

Though down, Gurdon refused to give up and go away. In fact, the Devils scored twice in the third to briefly cut the gap to 7-4.

Hayes opened with a double. He went to third on McGalliard's single. Rhodes struck out and W. Griffin grounded out to score Hayes.

N. Griffin got on board due to an error which scored McGalliard. J. Griffin, h
