In competition with over 300 AJSA members from 27 states, McKinnon placed first in the herdsman quiz. The week-long program included a wide range of cattle-related events and activities. Competition is designed to enhance the learning experience of the contestants through hands-on application, friendly competition and public recognition. Points are gained by competing in judging, showmanship, heifer competition (both Simmental and Simbrah), sales talk, public speaking, sire summary quiz and herdsman quiz. Non-scoring competition is also conducted in advertising and promotion, interviewing and beef bowl. Members of the Kansas Simmental Association, along with staff from Kansas State University and Hutchinson Community College, worked hand-in-hand with ASA staff to plan, coordinate and conduct the national classic, traditionally the grand finale of the activity year for the association's youth program. McKinnon was among 13 junior members of the association to receive the prestigious ASA Merit Award. She received the Silver Award, which include a $250 stipend to be used for post-secondary educational purposes. President of the Arkansas Junior Simmental/Simbrah Association, McKinnon has represented the group at numerous field days, county fairs, farm shows and cattlemen's conventions. Very active in FFA, she has held the office of both secretary and president and received the Chapter Star Farmer award last year. She maintains a herd of Simmental cattle and is responsible for the management decisions regarding the herd. Next year the Classic XX will be held in Stillwater, Okla.
