Wolverettes Showing Life On Softball Field

Published Wednesday, April 17, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Prescott's Wolverettes are still having problems on the softball diamond, but the team's offense is showing signs of life.

The junior varsity team, on the other hand, is beginning to learn how to win.

The Wolverettes were on the road all last week, making their first stop at Camden Fairview.

One bad inning led to a 23-4 loss for Prescott in the game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

The Wolverettes opened with a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but gave up four runs in the bottom of the frame.

The Lady Cardinals posted 14 runs in the bottom of the second to put the game, effectively, out of reach.

Prescott scored one in the third and another in the fifth.

Fairview added three in the third and a pair in the fourth.

Commanita Harris connected on two singles and scored for Prescott. Jill Stokes also belted twin singles in the game.

Jesna Cornelius singled and scored, as did Ashlea Stewart. Laura Culpepper touched them all after drawing a walk.

Mandy Cox, Sataria Dixon, Shannon Chambliss, Gladies Gulley and Kaci Ammons all singled.

The jv team also fell to the Lady Cards, but by a much closer margin, 8-7.

Coach Cecily Butler said her team would have won with one more inning, but the game was called after the one-hour time limit expired.

Fairview took a 4-0 lead after one, but saw Prescott tie the game in the top of the second.

The Lady Cards pulled back into the lead with a pair in the bottom of the frame.

The Wolverettes weren't done as they added one in the third, and held Camden blank in the inning.

Prescott took a short-lived lead with two in the top of the fourth to go up 7-6, but gave up two in the bottom as time expired.

Amber Arney paced the Wolverettes with twin singles and two runs scored. Jessie Ward singled and scored as did Melinda McGough, Kelly Wren, Gulley and Christy Martin.

Keshia Stuckey, however, led the team with two singles. Laura Culpepper and Kelli Ashbrook each singled in the game.

The Wolverettes were error-prone in their game against Blevins, as the Lady Hornets posted a 20-5 win in five innings.

Prescott scored once in the first and second, and three times in the fourth.

Blevins sent 10 around the bases in the first, three more in the second and seven in the fourth.

The Wolverettes began showing signs of being able to belt the ball farther in this game as Harris ripped a round-tripper. Stokes, Dixon and Stewart all doubled. Stewart's double and single helped her score twice as well.

Cox singled and scored in the contest, as did Martin. Laura Grayson and McGough singled.

The jv team posted its second by clipping Blevins 8-7.

Prescott scored three in the top of the first, four in the second and a final insurance run in the third.

Blevins fought back with one in the first, five in the third and one in the fourth.

Stokes connected on two singles and a double, scoring once. Ward scored twice in the game. Chambliss smacked a triple, a single and scored. Gulley singled and scored. Grayson belted a twin-bagger and scored, as did Wren. Arney singled and scored for Prescott.

Ammons, Stuckey and Heather McLelland all singled as well.

From there, the Wolverettes went to the Fouke Tournament where they played three games.

They fell to host Fouke 18-0 in the tourney opener. Butler said she was shorthanded as several members of the team were taking their ACT tests.

Fouke scored 17 runs in the first, adding its last insult in the fourth.

Cox and Stokes were the only two Wolverettes to get hits.

Game two saw Magnolia's Lady Panthers run up the score against Prescott with a 32-0 win.

Magnolia scored three in the first, eight in the second and 21 in the fourth, as the Magnolia coach kept in the first team throughout most of the game.

Cox singled twice for Prescott. Stokes, Gulley and Ammons all singles as well.

In game three, the Wolverettes were able to give Nashville all they wanted before falling 9-4.

Again, the Wolverettes had one bad inning which cost them the game.

Prescott led 2-1 after one, but Nashville tied the game at 3-3 at the end of three. The Wolverettes took the lead with a run in the top of the fourth, but gave up six runs in the bottom of the inning.

Stokes double, singled and scored two runs in the game. Gulley singled twice and scored once. Culpepper singled and scored also.

Dixon and Stuckey belted two one-baggers. Cox, Martin, Stewart and Arney also had singles.

The Wolverettes will entertain Nashville Wednesday afternoon at 4 at the James Johnson Sports Complex.
