PHS Baseball Team Defeats Dragons

Published Wednesday, April 17, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Prescott's Diamond Wolves split a pair of games last week.

The Curley Wolves edged Junction City 5-3, but fell to Stamps 8-4. The Wolves are now 9-3 overall and 2-1 in 7-AA league play.

The April 8 game was also historic in the fact it was Prescott's first win ever over Junction City in baseball.

The Dragons, going into the game, were ranked third in class AA. They are now 1-1 in conference play and 19-7 overall.

For the most part, the game was dominated by superb pitching on both sides.

Barrett Yates, Prescott's undefeated ace at 6-0, went the distance. He faced 32 batters, gave up three runs on six hits, walked four and sent nine down on strikes.

Roshto, the loser for Junction City, also pitched the full seven frames. He went up against 30 Wolves, allowed four hits, five runs, walked six and fanned 11.

Each team committed two errors.

Being the visiting team, Prescott was on offense first. Yates drew a walk and was replaced on first by Al Johnston, who promptly stole second and third.

Jerome Fulks and Ben Jones were two of Roshto's strikeout victims. Montra Montgomery kept the inning alive by walking. He then stole second .

Johnston, however, scored when Montgomery was caught in no man's land between second and third.

The Dragons were able to get a man on in their half of the first, but were unable to advance the runner.

Charlie Rockett went down on strikes to open the second. Jamie Williams singled, but was stranded as Ross Cowling and Jason Webb were both fanned.

Kennedy opened with a double for the Dragons, but watched as two of his teammates grounded out and the other was struck out.

John Cornelius led off the third by striking out. Yates reached on an error and was again replaced by Johnston. Johnston, however, went nowhere as he was picked off. The inning ended with Fulks grounding out.

Junction City fared no better, with the exception of Martindale's single. Yates fanned two and got the third batter to ground out.

Jones singled to open the fourth, but watched as Montgomery flied out and Rockett and Williams went down swinging.

The Dragons offense came alive briefly as the host team took a 2-1 lead.

Yates fanned his counterpart, Roshto, before Kennedy reached on an error. Allen flied out and Justin Brantley doubled Kennedy home. Daniels doubled, bringing Brantley in. He was left when Ford flied out.

The Wolves were unable to respond offensively in the top of the fifth, stranding Cowling, who walked. Johnston replaced Cornelius in the inning, and he and Webb were both fanned. Yates was the third out on a fly ball.

Two Dragons reached base in the bottom of the frame, but were left as the Wolf defense stiffened and ended the threat.

The sixth inning made the difference in the game for Prescott, as four runners circled the paths.

Fulks got the offense started with a walk. Jones singled to put Fulks in scoring position. Montgomery flied out.

Rockett walked to load the bags, and was replaced by courtesy runner Shane Pipkin.

Williams followed with a fly out, before Cowling got an easy RBI by walking Fulks home.

A wild pitch allowed Jones to score. Webb's single drove Pipkin home. Cowling also crossed the plate on a wild pitch to third. Stockton was the pinch hitter for Cornelius and grounded out.

Yates was able to send the Dragons back to their lair in order in the bottom of the inning, with the Wolves holding a 5-2 lead.

However, Roshto returned the favor in the top of the seventh as Yates, Fulks and Jones were retired in order.

The Dragons fired their last heated breath in the bottom of the inning.

Ford opened by grounding out. Heaberlin and Martindale were issued free passes to first. Brantley doubled Heaberlin home to cut the lead to 5-3.

But Roshto grounded out and Kennedy was fanned to end the game.

The Dragons got even with the Wolves in the junior varsity contest with a 10-0 win in a one-hitter.

The game was called after three innings because of the 10-run rule.

Johnston was the lone Wolf to get a hit in the contest.

The Wolves didn't fare as well against Stamps Friday, April 12, as they went down 8-4.

Cowling went to 1-1 on the season, as he took the loss. He went 5 1/3 innings, going against 25 batters, giving up four hits, five walks and four runs. He fanned 11.

Yates came in for 2/3 of an inning. He pitched to five batters, allowed four runs, two hits, gave up no walks and recorded no strike outs.

The game opened with Yates flying out. Fulks walked and stole second. He went to third when the catcher's throw to second sailed high.

Fulks scored when Jones connected for a single. Montgomery followed by batting into a 6-3 double-play.

Stamps tied the game at 1-1, when Meeler walked and stole second. Johnson went down on strikes.

Gilbeau singled, driving Meeler in. Cearley fanned and Martin walked. Ervin struck out to end the frame.

The Wolves added another run in the second.

Rockett walked and was replaced by Pipkin, who stole second and went to third on a passed ball.

Williams struck out and Cowling reached on a catcher's interference call. He went to second on a passed ball.

Webb went down swinging. Cornelius and Yates walked to load the bases, with Yates getting an RBI when Pipkin scored. The threat ended with Fulks grounding out.

Sanders walked for the Yellowjackets in the second. He was gunned down by Rockett while trying to steal. Dunbar and Sims were both fanned.

Prescott took a 4-1 lead with a pair in the top of the third.

Jones ripped a single and stole second. Montgomery singled Jones home, and followed by stealing second himself. He went to third when the catcher missed his throw to second again. Montgomery scored when the centerfielder's throw to third went awry.

Rockett followed this with a single and was replaced by Pipkin, who was forced when Williams hit into a fielder's choice. Cowling struck out to end the inning.

Stamps tied the game with three in its half of the inning.

Meeler singled and stole second. Johnson was fanned. Guilbeau reached on a throwing error. Cearley doubled the pair in, and scored when the throw to third went wild. Martin flied out and Ervin was fanned to end the inning.

Brian Vanhook pinch hit for Cornelius and grounded out. Yates walked but was caught attempting to steal second. Fulks went down on strikes.

It was three up and three down for Stamps in the fourth as well.

The fifth saw Jones and Montgomery ground out and Rockett fan.

Again, the scenario was repeated for Stamps with one ground out and two Ks.

The Wolves threatened to score in the top of the sixth.

Williams flied out.
