PHS Defeats Stamps At Local Relays

Published Wednesday, April 24, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Prescott Curley Wolves and the Stamps Yellowjackets hooked up twice in one week and the Wolves were able to squeak by at SAU and in the 22nd annual Prescott Merchants' Relays held last Thursday. Last week brought Prescott's first victories over the outstanding track team at Stamps.

"The weather was good, the competition level was high and there were 23 schools in attendance to make it a very successful Merchants' Relays meet to close out the 1996 relay season," Prescott coach Eddie Jackson said. Jackson, the meet director, said there were several state qualifiers from class B, A, AA, and AAA sized schools.

Stamps did have a few minor injuries that hurt them teamwise, but they were still ahead by four points going into the 4x400 relay.

"The Wolves' four-man squad of J. Cornelius, C.D. Flemons, R. Johnson and C. Butler stepped on to the track to respond to the New Boston Lions challenge and to win a track meet the way you are supposed to -- by winning the man's relay!" Jackson said.

"Our squad stepped off the fastest time recorded in the state this season," Jackson said. "They opened the meet by winning the superman 4x800 relay in a meet and school record time of 8:21.5 which ranks as third in the state through this week, and if this group can stay together for two more meets (district and state) they will get a chance to compete against schools like Texarkana, Fairview, Rogers and Pine Bluff in the Meet of Champions on May 8."

Listed below are the merchant sponsors and winners of the 17 events. Not listed is the "honey bun" relay won by Prescott. This is a fun event, which features shot and disc weight men in a 4x100 relay. The prizes are not the Olympic type medals, but candy bars, doughnuts, etc.

Every school competing in this athletic event expressed their appreciation to the sponsor for the great awards. Medals were presented to first (gold), second (silver) and third (bronze) place finishers and ribbons for fourth through sixth place.

In addition to these and the team trophies, this meet features an outstanding performer award in place of the traditional high point award.

In the men's division, the outstanidng field event performer award went to Howell of Stamps with a leap of six feet and six inches in the high jump.

Prescott's John Cornelius was awarded the outstanding track performer. "John did not score a lot of points, but he anchored the record setting 4x800 relay with a 1:58, ran a 49.3 400 without being pushed and opened the 4x100 relay with a 49.5, Jackson said.
