Bats Blaze As Wolverettes Win First Game, 14-7

Prescott's Wolverette softball team earned its first win of the year Tuesday with a 14-7 win over Blevins.

The Wolverette's bats came alive in the game, as the Prescott crew sent five around the bases in the opening frame, added five more in the third and pushed a quartet of runs across in the bottom of the sixth.

The Lady Hornets drew first blood with a run in the top of the first, added two in the second and four in the sixth.

Mandy Cox had a hot stick as she belted twin singles, ripped a double and scored. Jesna Cornelius singled twice and scored in the game, while Jill Stokes smacked a pair of one-baggers and scored three times.

Sataria Dixon singled but scored three times. Commanita Harris doubled, singled and scored a trio of runs. Ashlea Stewart smashed a triple, singled and scored twice. Laura Grayson beat out three singles and scored. Keshia Stuckey singled. Kaci Ammons and Shannon Chambliss each connected for a pair of singles.

The junior varsity team, though, fell 13-5 in five innings as they played Blevins' senior squad.

Blevins struck first with nine in the third, added three in the fourth and one in the fifth.

The Wolverettes fought back with two in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Amber Arney got all of one for a round-trip of the bases, while Ammons singled and scored, as did Christy Martin. Tamra Marlar also singled and scored. Heather McLelland singled twice and crossed home once.

Also in the game, Laura Culpepper doubled and Kelly Ashbrook singled.

Wednesday was not a good day for the Wolverettes as they succumbed to Nashville 23-2.

The Lady Scrappers opened the game with a dozen runs, adding two in the second, another pair in the third, four in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Prescott scored twice in the second.

Stewart belted twin singles and scored, while Grayson singled and crossed home as well. Ammons doubled in the contest, while Cornelius and Stokes both singled. Martin smacked a pair of singles as well.

The Merchant Relays didn't do the Wolverettes any favors, as four members of the softball team also run track and were out for the game against Delight Thursday.

However, the first-year team fought hard before going down 8-4 in six innings.

The Wolverettes scored single runs in the second, third, fourth and sixth frames.

Delight's Lady Bulldogs scored twice in the first, three times in the third, two more crossed in the fourth and once in the sixth.

Ammons wielded the hot stick with three singles and a pair of runs scored. Stokes and Lori Burke also singled and scored.

Cox singled and doubles, while Cornelius connected on a pair of singles, as did Dixon, Grayson and Ashbrook. Martin and Arney also singled.

Prescott's junior varsity team went down 14-2.

The Wolverettes scored their two runs in the third.

Delight scored five in the second, three in the fourth and six in the fifth.

Ammons smacked a double and single and scored, while Cox singled and scored. Stokes belted twin singles and a double. Dixon singled and doubled. Arney smacked two singles. Culpepper, Martin and Marlar all singled.
