Wolverettes End Season

Published Wednesday, May 1, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Prescott's Wolverettes proved they were willing to get wet for their sport as they played five innings of softball in the rain Monday, April 22.

However, the visit to Magnolia in the rain was not a pleasant one as the Wolverettes fell 21-0.

The Lady Panthers, being more familiar with their field, and having more experience than the first-year team from Prescott, scored three in the first inning. From there they added two in the second, three in the sixth and 10 in the fourth.

Jesna Cornelius and Laura Culpepper doubled for the Wolverettes, while Christy Martin, Kaci Ammons and Jill Stokes all singled.

The junior varsity team was battling tooth and nail with the Lady Panthers, but the game was called in the second because of rain with the score 4-4.

Both teams scored their runs in the first inning.

Cornelius led the team with a triple and scored a run. Sataria Dixon, Ammons and Culpepper all singled and scored in the contest.

Wednesday saw the Wolverettes host Fouke in their final league contest. The Lady Panthers were able to post a 16-2 win.

Prescott put the first two runs on the board in the bottom of the opening frame, but was unable to score again.

Fouke scored six in the second, two in the third and fourth, and another six in the top of the fifth.

Stokes belted a triple, but was left at third. Cox and Cornelius both singled and scored for Prescott. Ashlea Stewart and Martin each added singles in the contest.

Prescott's junior varsity squad then tangled with Fouke's senior team and went down 15-0.

Fouke scored four in the first, seven in the second, and two each in the third and fourth.

Stewart's double was the best the Wolverettes could do. Laura Grayson, Tamara Marlar, Shannon Chambliss, Kelli Ashbrook and Melinda McGough all posted singles.

In a pickup game Friday, April 26 against Delight, though, the Wolverettes were pushed to the limit and walked away with a 20-19 win over the Lady Bulldogs.

Going into the game, the Lady 'Dogs were 11-3.

Wolverette coach Cecily Butler told her charges they had nothing to lose and to "go out swinging the bats." This they did in putting 20 runs on the board.

Delight, though, opened with a 4-3 lead after one. The Lady 'Dogs pulled to an 8-3 lead at the end of two, and were up 11-5 when the final out was made in the third frame.

The situation looked bleak after four when the Delight team added seven more to take an 18-8 lead.

But, then, the Wolverette offense kicked in full throttle. They added three in the fifth, five in the sixth (while holding Delight to its last run) and finished off the game with four in the bottom of the seventh to take the victory.

Alicia Gulley, who singled twice, doubled and tripled in the game, scored the winning run, her fourth time to cross home in the game.

The offensive display had Cox with twin singles and a pair of doubles, Cornelius singled twice, doubled and scored, Stokes scored twice on two singles, Dixon circled the bases three times on a homer, two singles and a double, Grayson smacked a single, double and scored once as well.

Stewart followed with twin one-baggers and a run, Ammons belted two singles and scored twice, Martin circled the bases twice on three singles, Culpepper touched them all twice with a single and double and Lakeshia Stuckey singled and scored twice in the game.

The time factor proved detrimental to the junior varsity squad as the 60 minute limit expired before the Wolverettes could bat in the bottom of the fifth while trailing 20-13.

Prescott scored seven in the bottom of the first to go up 7-2. Delight battled back with three in the second, five in the third, eight in the fourth and two in the fifth.

The Wolverettes continued the battle with one in the second, three in the third and a pair in the fourth.

Ammons had the hot hand as she scored twice on four singles. Culpepper singled and scored, Martin singled, Grayson smacked three singles and scored twice, Steward walked and scored, Stokes singled, doubled and crossed home on two occasions, Gulley belted two doubles and scored, Commanita Harris singled and scored twice, Kelley Wren walked and scored, Jesse Ward singled, Cornelius belted twin singles a double and scored.

The Wolverettes entered district tourney play in Fordyce Tuesday with a date against top seed Hamburg, 13-0 on the year.

They are assured of playing at least two games in the double-elimination event.
