PHS Track Full of Tradition, RivalryPublished Wednesday, May 1, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe Curley Wolf track and field program is so rich in pride and tradition that it helped them over the Stamps Yellowjackets last Thursday night at Nashville. The Prescott-Stamps rivalry has been very intense for several years since Rick Baker established the type of program that allowed the Jackets to win indoor and outdoor state championships for the last two years. Looking back in history the Wolves' track tradition got started in the 1970's with some junior high conference and state titlles. This led to varsity district championships in 1975 and 1979. The 1980's seemed to belong to the Wolves as they were crowned champs in 1982 through 1990. In 1991 the Fordyce Redbugs had so much talent they couldn't help from winning, but the Wolves took back over in 1992 and 1993. Stamps won it in 1994 and 1995 with the Wolves finishing as runner-up both years. Beginning in March of 1996 the competition kicked off again as Stamps won the indoor title and Prescott finished as runner-up. This continued in the De Queen Relays, Texarkana Relays and the Scrapper Relays. Prescott took over at SAU, the Merchants' Relays and after a tough uphill battle, the 7AA crown last week. On Tuesday, the Wolves didn't fare too well in the prelims or field events, but they did manage a district record performance from C. Butler, C.D. Flemons, Jason Morrow and J. Cornelius in the 4x800 meter relay. Listed below is a recap of the 17 event meet scoring. Shot put: -- K. Johnson took fifth place with a personal record for two points. High jump: -- C. Several Wolves were hurting, injured and sick, but they kept fighting back to regain their conference title. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
