Curley Wolves In State Track Meet Saturday

Published Wednesday, May 1, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

The AA state track and field meet will be held this Saturday at Heber Springs.

This figures to be another classic showdown between Stamps and Prescott, but a non-athletic related injury early this week to senior John Cornelius will hamper the Wolves' chances. Cornelius leads the state in the in the 400, 800 and is a main leg on the state's best 4x800 and 4x400 relay teams.

Nevertheless, the Wolves will give it their best shot to accomplish a feat never done at PHS. They want to win a state track championship in the same school year of a football championship. "This would be tough at our very best and with injuries to John, Jason Morrow and Rashad Johnson it will be a greater challenge," coach Eddie Jackson said.

Stamps is the defending state champ and they have the quality athletes in several events to repeat. Track and field coaches all understand a squad can win a conference meet with depth (proven last week), but it takes quality performance to win a state title.

"The Wolves felt all spring we may have a better shot at state than we did in district, but the determination and effort shown last week proved what can happen if you set your mind to the job at hand," Jackson said.

Listed below are the events the Wolves should be qualified in for state competition and a note about their scoring chances. Coach Jackson said he felt it would take 60 points to win. Barring injuries the Wolves had a possibility of winning five events for 50 points and hopefully picking up a few points in the other events. Stamps on the other hand, has one athlete capable of scoring 40 to 50 points by himself.

Long jump: R. Johnson (22'3") and C. Flemons (21'11") both passed the qualifying mark, but will have to improve to score.

Pole vault: E. Fain and Jason Morrow have a chance to score.

Discus: T. Burton qualified by the standards.

4x800-meter relay: State's best time (8:21).

4x100-meter relay: Long shot at scoring.

120 hurdles: Channing Butler is one of the state's best at 14.6 feet.

4x200 relay: Outside chance of scoring.

400-meter run: John Cornelius (49.3) one of the state's best and C. Flemons (51.4) could score.

800-meter run: John C. is the state's best (1:57.8).

200-meter dash: John qualified by the standards.

4x400 relay: state's best at 3:23.7.
