Montgomery grounded out, but Williams was able to cross home for Prescott. Yates struck out to end the rally. But the lead had been cut to 14-5 and the Wolves were trying to come back. Fordyce's offense was held in check for the first time of the game in the sixth. Musgrove fanned and Wagnon walked. Williams batted into a fielder's choice with Wagnon forced at second. Williams was gunned down by Rockett as he attempted to steal second himself. The Wolves added their final run in the sixth. Fulks flied out to start the frame. Rockett got hold of one, taking it out of the park for his second homer of the season. Cornelius was fanned and Cowling grounded out to end the frame. Richart singled for the 'Bugs' seventh, but watched as Trudell, Rowlett and Wallace were all fanned by Cowling. However, it was three up and three down for Prescott in their half of the seventh. The 'Bugs also won the junior varsity game by a score of 4-0. Matt Wingfield was the lone Wolf to get a hit in the game. The final 7AA standings for the regular season saw DeQueen in first place with a 5-1 mark; Junction City and Nashville were next with 4-2 records; Fordyce and Prescott followed at 3-3; while Stamps was 2-4; and Gurdon was 0-6. The Wolves earned a fifth seed in the District 7AA tourney at DeQueen, playing No. 6 seed Stamps Saturday, April 27. Prescott opened the tourney by thrashing Stamps 13-1 and advanced to the next round with a date against DeQueen Monday afternoon. The Yellowjackets were the visiting team for the first round of district action. Yates posted his seventh win of the season, going the distance against 17 batters, allowing two hits, one run, no walks and recording seven Ks. In fact, Yates held the 'Jackets in check until the top of the fifth, at which time it really didn't matter as far as the outcome of the game was concerned. The game started off bad for Prescott as Meeler reached on an error. However, things quickly turned around as Rockett gunned Meeler down as he tried to swipe second. Sanders and Nelson were Yates' first two Ks. The Wolves posted a three-spot in their part of the first. Johnston walked. Stockton bunted Johnston to second. Consecutive singles by Jones and Montgomery drove Johnston in. Yates flied out. Fulks belted a single, bringing Jones and Montgomery to the promised land. Rockett doubled, but he and Fulks were stranded when Cornelius grounded out. The situation didn't improve for Stamps in the second as Cearley, Ervin and Guilbeau were retired in order. Prescott added one in the bottom of the frame, which opened with Cowling being issued a free pass to first. Johnston struck out, but Stockton singled Cowling in. Jones hit into a fielder's choice, which sent Stockton back to the pines. Montgomery then grounded out. Stamps did the one, two, three, out dance in the top of the third as well. Yates recorded two more strike outs in the frame. He also led off Prescott's part of the inning by grounding out. Fulks walked and Rockett was hit by a pitch. C. Vanhook took over for Rockett at first. He and Fulks scored when Cornelius belted a two-bagger. Cowling grounded out, but drove Cornelius in. Johnston flied out to end the frame with Prescott holding a 7-0 lead. Stamps recorded its first hit of the game in the top of the fourth as Meeler singled. Not that it mattered as the next three were retired without incident. Flexing its offensive muscles, Prescott added a six-pack in the bottom of the fourth. In fact, it took a while before the first out was recorded in the frame. Stockton started with a walk, went to second when Jones singled and advanced to home on a Montgomery single. Yates drew a walk and was replaced at first by Pipkin. Fulks smacked a single bringing in Jones and Montgomery. Rockett's single brought Pipkin around the final turn and into home. Vanhook took Rockett's place at first and scored, along with Fulks, when Cornelius singled. Mercifully, for Stamps anyway, the next three batters were retired. Ervin belted a home run to give Stamps its lone score. Guilbeau and Grace were fanned, while Sims flied out. Yates earned a measure of revenge in the game, as the 'Jackets had given him his first loss of the season, 8-4. Semifinal action in the district contest will be held Tuesday, with the finals set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 2 against the host team Leopards.
