Curley Wolves Open Up Tournament With Win

Prescott's diamond Wolves opened last week by clipping DeQueen 5-3, Tuesday, April 23.

This victory gave the Wolves an 11-4 overall mark, placed them 3-2 in the 7AA league race and earned the team a ninth place ranking in the state AA division.

Ross Cowling earned the win, going the distance for Prescott. He faced 29 batters, allowed five hits, three runs, walked one and fanned five.

Cowling sent the side down in order in the top of the first as McCoy flied out, Powell struck out and McCastlain grounded out.

The Wolves opened with Al Johnston belting a single. Jimmy Stockton dropped a bunt sending Johnston to second. Ben Jones followed with a line drive to second, which resulted in a double play.

Still, Cowling refused to allow the Leopards anything in the second. Baker flied out and the tandem of Atkins and Williams grounded out.

Montra Montgomery gave Prescott its first scoring opportunity as he led off with a double in the bottom of the second. Barrett Yates followed with a single.

Montgomery was nailed at the plate attempting to score on Yates' single. Jerome Fulks then grounded out and Charlie Rockett flied out.

After Lites flied out, the Leopards got their first baserunner, though it was shortlived. Pearce singled, but was gunned down trying to stretch it into a double. Martin followed by grounding out to retire the side.

Matt Wingfield and John Cornelius struck out to start the third for Prescott. Johnston drew a walk but was stranded as Stockton grounded out.

The Leopards drew first blood in the top of the fourth.

McCoy opened by flying out. Powell was fanned for the second out. McCastlain singled and scored on Baker's double. Atkins also singled, but he and Baker were left as Williams flied out.

The Wolves responded with their first run as well.

Jones flied out. Montgomery singled and stole second. Yates flied out. Fulks drove Montgomery in with a single. Rockett ended the inning with a deep fly out.

DeQueen fired its final offensive shot in the top of the fifth as the Leopards took a 3-1 lead.

Lites started by flying out. Pearce walked. Martin was fanned. McCoy singled. Powell reached on an error which allowed Pearce and McCoy to score. McCastlain went down swinging to end the frame.

From there on out, it was all Prescott. The Wolves sent three runners to touch them all and take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Wingfield grounded out to start the inning. Jamie Williams pinch hit for Cornelius and belted a double. Johnston picked up an RBI as he singled Williams home.

Stockton followed with a walk. Jones was fanned. Montgomery ripped a double which drove Johnston and Stockton in. Yates ended the frame with a fly ball.

Four Leopards went to bat, three returned to the dugout empty handed. Atkins reached on an error and was left.

The Wolves added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.

Fulks was fanned before Rockett singled. Shane Pipkin replaced Rockett on first. Wingfield struck out. Williams belted a single, driving Pipkin in.

Jason Webb, pinch hitting for Johnston, struck out, but the Wolves led 5-3 with three outs left in the game.

Pearce reached on an error for DeQueen, but watched helplessly as the next three batters were retired in order.

In Prescott's second game of the week, Wednesday, April 24, Yates suffered his second loss on the hill as the Wolves were dumped 14-6 by Fordyce.

This was the final regular season game of the year. The Wolves ended the season with an 11-5 mark overall and were 3-3 in league play, putting them in a tie for third.

However, during the regular season, Prescott whipped the top two seeds in the district tourney.

Yates went 2 1/3 innings, facing 17, allowing seven runs on five hits with two walks. He struck out three batters.

Yates was replaced by Jones who pitched 3 2/3 innings. Jones went up against 19 batters, gave up seven runs on eight hits, with three walks and two Ks.

Cowling pitched the seventh inning, facing four, allowing one hit, no runs, no walks and striking out three.

The Redbugs got started early on offense with three in the first.

Richart was fanned before Trudell reached on an error. Rowlett hit into a fielder's choice, but Trudell was safe at second.

Wallace hit into a fielder's choice which saw Rowlett out at second. Morgan cleared the bases with a three-run homer. Reynolds singled, but was left as Musgrove grounded out.

The side went down in order for Prescott as Johnston grounded out, Stockton flied out and Jones grounded out.

Fordyce added a run in the second to go up 4-0.

Wagnon reached on an error. Williams was fanned. Richart grounded out. Trudell singled, driving Wagnon in. Rowlett went down on strikes to end the inning.

Again, it was three up and three down for Prescott in the second. Montgomery and Fulks were victims of the K, while Yates grounded out.

Three more 'Bugs scored in the third.

Wallace opened with frame with a walk. Morgan advanced him to second with a single. Reynolds drove Wallace in with his one-bagger. Morgan was nailed trying to steal third. Musgrove walked. Wagnon doubled, driving Reynolds in.

Williams grounded out in front of Richart, who singled, driving Musgrove in. Richart was caught trying to steal third as well.

For the third straight inning, the Wolves were unable to get a man on base. Rockett and Cowling went down swinging, while Cornelius grounded out.

The 'Bugs kept biting away at the Wolves offensively as five more scored in the fourth.

Trudell opened by flying out. Rowlett and Wallace single. Rowlett scored when Morgan singled. Reynolds followed with a double, driving in Wallace and Morgan.

Musgrove didn't fool around as he took one out of the park, driving in Reynolds.

Wagnon walked, but was left as Williams flied out and Richart was fanned. But the 'Bugs held a 12-0 lead.

The Wolves got on the board in the bottom of the fourth.

Johnston opened with a walk and promptly stole second. Stockton struck out. Jones drew a walk. Montgomery hit into a fielder's choice, which saw Jones caught at second.

Yates doubled, driving Johnston in. Fulks grounded out to end the inning.

Fordyce fired its final salvo in the fifth with two more.

Trudell and Rowlett both grounded out before Wallace walked. Morgan stepped up and belted a round-tripper. Reynolds also grounded out.

Prescott fought back with four in their part of the inning.

Rockett reached on an error and was replaced on the bag by Carlos Vanhook. Cornelius walked. Cowling's double drove Vanhook in.

Johnston grounded out, but got an RBI as Cornelius scored. Williams pinch hit for Stockton and was hit himsel
