Smith Lauded For Her EffortsPublished Wednesday, May 1, 1996 in the Gurdon TimesMary Smith, manager of the Sonic Drive-In of Gurdon, received recognition at the company's recent national convention in Nashville, Tenn. The Gurdon Sonic Drive-In at 209 E. Main, experienced a $50,000 increase in net sales for fiscal year 1995. Orginally known a the Top Hat Drive-In, Sonic was founded in 1953 in Shawnee, Okla. Sonic has grown to more than 1,500 drive-ins in 27 sunbelt states. The company's nation headquarters is located in Oklahoma City, Okla. Sonic is the nation's largest chain of drive-in restaurtants and America's fifth largest hamburger chain. More than half a million people eat at Sonic Drive-Ins everyday.
