National Police Week Proclaimed By Gurdon Mayor

Published Wednesday, May 1, 1996 in the Gurdon Times

The week of May 12-18 will be National Police Week. Mayor Rick Smith is to sign a proclamation for the recognition of the men and women who put their lives on the line for all of us, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

A special week honoring those who protect the citizens was set aside by the late President John F. Kennedy by presidential order in 1962.

"This is a time for us to honor them and remember the sacrifices many have made over the years," Eugene Edwards, the chaplain of the Gurdon Police Department, said in a prepared statement.

There is a memorial in Washington, D.C., to do just this. Next week there will be more than 10,000 police officers, survivors and supporters attending National Police Week activities in the nation's capital.

May 15 is the day set aside to remember those who have given their all for their communities.

"We hope to have some sort of memorial service here in Gurdon, in the county and, hopefully, throughout the state, to remember these public servants," Rev. Edwards, who also the minister of Gurdon First Presbyterian Church, said.

"Won't you please remember, during this week, to let our law enforcement officers know how much you appreciate the fine work they do here in Gurdon and through the state?" Edwards asked. "Your support will mean much to them. Also remember to pray for them in your churches.

"Pastors, invite law enforcemen people to your church also."
