Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, May 8, 1996 in the Gurdon Times

All I can do is apologize to you faithful readers and ask that you forgive me, as I failed to have an article in last week's paper. It sure is good to know that it was missed however. you may not realize just how much your calls mean to me.

The Student Council held the monthly assembly and recognized the Citizen Students for April: Tommy Dickerson, 5th Grade. LaVader Dickens, 6th Grade, William Davis, 7th Grade, and Whitney Hogue, 8th Grade. The candidates for officers and representatives gave their speeches for the position of which they were seeking. Although they said they were nervous, they delivered their speeches in a most professional way, one would have thought they were "Old pros". They handled the microphone as though they use it everyday. Compliments to those students for a job well done!

The new officers and representives are: President, Kenneth O'Connell; Vice-President, Joe Plyler; Secretary, Katrina Simpson; Parliamentarian, Justin Smith; Treasurer, J.T. Tarpley; Reporter, Joshua Swinea; 8th grade Representatives, William Davis and Adam Clark; 7th Grade Representatives, Torey Dixon, Carrie Gibson and Kenard Pegram and 6th Grade Representatives, Tracy Coplen, Bonnie Ferguson and Lacey Jester. The installation will be conducted May 22.

The Jr. High Quiz Bowl team have been preparing for their competition. The team members, Whitney Hogue, Andrew Wilson, Martin Downey, B.J. Griffin, and alternate Flint King will represent our school with great WISDOM.

Mrs. Roe, chairperson of the School Climate committee for COE, and the committee members have been busy making our school a more pleasant educational environment. We are enjoying several plants at the entrance of our building and hearing of other improvements coming our way. It is so exciting "adding our special touch" to our "home away from home".

Sad news however, Mrs. Roe shared some bad news with us and I don't think that she would object to me letting you know about it. If you know Mrs. Roe, then you know how she is about her pets. Well, her pet "T-Bird" is now in the "special nest" on the "highest limb" with a very special caretaker. Of course, it was difficult for Mrs. Roe, as she will miss hearing that little whistle that was special to her. Mr. Alexander didn't help matters, as after the fact, he gave Mrs. Roe a "Get Well Soon" card for T-Bird. He didn't have a sympathy card! But the thought was there, so he says.

The Beta Club sponsored a dance for the 7th and 8th graders. It was enjoyed by the large number that attended. Several parents attended and their presence was greatly appreciated. It is so good to know that we can depend upon parents to help out and we do thank you.

Mrs. Clingan's 8th grade Social Studies classes will be presenting a play "Memories Through Arkansas" May 15, and they are busy rehearsing. It is a historical play, but presented in a humorous way. You are invited to attend May 15 at 12:30. Admission will be $1.00, as this is sponsored by the Student Council it is a fund raiser to help furnish needed items we can all enjoy.

Fridays have become Fun Fridays until school is dismissed. Each Friday has something for eveyrone to be able to take part.

We had Hat Friday, and students could wear their hats all day, even in their classes without getting in trouble. Wish you could have seen all the variations of hats and caps. Inside out day was next, as clothes were worn inside out. I must say, for some this was very difficult, but fun was shared by each and everyone. The next Fun Friday will be Twinkie Friday, more about that later.

When we see Coach Reece wearing a bandage on a finger we know he must have real bad injury. He managed to get his finger caught in the garage door. I just didn't have the nerve to ask how that happened, but he seems to be doing just fine, as he is his own MD!

Thanks for your support and the comments about our article. We stay busy making those Classy Moments to share with you.
