Young Earns Auburn Smith Award At SAU

Avery Henry, a football player from Phenix City, Ala., and Rachel Young, a basketball player from Rosston, were winners of the Auburn Smith Award at the Southern Arkansas University All-Sports banquet Monday night, April 19.

Henry was a four-year starter for the Muleriders in the defensive line.

He was second team All-AIC in 1993 and first-team All-AIC in 1994. He was second-team All-GSC in 1995. He has shown great leadership both on and off the field and is very active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Baptist Student Union.

Young set eight school records for the Riderette basketball team in her four years as a starter for the Riderettes.

She is the career leading scorer and set a single game scoring record this year with 47 points; she has the single season field goal percentage for two-pointers and combined field goal percentage, she has the two-point career field goal record, the career rebound record, the single-season rebound record and the career blocked shot record.

Young was All-AIC first team in 1994 and 1995, led the AIC in scoring and was second in rebounding in 1994-95, was first-team NAIA Southwest Region in 1995-96, was twice NAIA Southwest Region player-of-the-week in 1995-96, was named All-GSC first team in 1995-96 and NAIA All-American honorable mention in 1995-96.

In track and field, where she doubled as an athlete, Young was All- AIC in 1993, 1994 and 1995. She was high-point in the AIC track and field championship meet in 1994 with 20 1/4 points and 1995 with 22 1/4 points. She set a new SAU long jump record in 1994 with 18 feet and ten inches and new AIC record with 18 feet and seven inches. She was an All-American in 1995.

David Bartee, as junior from Bossier City, La., and Amy Proctor, a senior from DeKalb, Texas, were winners of SAU's Scholar-Athlete Awards.

Bartee, a second-team All-AIC linebacker selection in 1994, was a leader both on and off the feeld when the 'Riders played football in the GSC and NCAA Division II for the first time in 1995. He has a 3.31 grade point average in kinesiology. Bartee is very active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Proctor has an impressive 3.75 grade point average in kinesiology with a minor in math. She was first-team All-AIC in volleyball in 1994, an NAIA Scholar All-American in 1994 and 1995 and was named to the GTE Academic All-American team in 1995 after SAU became members of NCAA Division II and the GSC. An outside hitter, Proctor helped lead the Riderettes to a second-place finish in the 1995 GSC West volleyball race with an 8-2 record.

Receiving outstanding senior athlete awards were Stan Calloway, a pitcher from Strong, and Chris Starkey, a first-baseman from Arnold, Mo., in baseball; Chris Coleman, a forward from Memphis, Tenn., in men's basektball; Rachel Young, a forward from Rosston in women's basketball; Arthur Courtney from Dermott and Monica Baker from Conway in men's and women's cross country; Del Chunn, a defensive back from Denton, Texas, in football; Kevin Cortez of Magnolia in men's golf; Shelly Torrance of Katy, Texas, in women's tennis; Steven Ogden, a sprinter from Hope, in men's track and field; Stephanie Manning a sprinter from Magnolia, in women's track and field; Belinda Wiliams, a middle blocker in volleyball from Garland, Texas; Janssen May, a trainer from New Boston, Texas; and Karen Masanelli of Hope, cheerleader.

Dr. Jay Adcox, faculty athletic representative, was master of ceremonies. Wayne Taylor, a former SAU athlete and member of the board of trustees, gave the invocation.

Presenting awards were Monroe Ingram, men's basketball coach; Andrea Underhill, women's tennis coach; Cari Brown of the cheerleaders; Sam Biley, women's basketball coach; Dave Graham, men's golf coach; Ken Cole, head trainer, to the student trainers; Dan Veach, men's and women's cross country and track and field coach; Michelle Shoppach, volleyball coach; Steve Roberts, football coach; Steve Goodheart, baseball coach; and W.T. Watson, the athletic director, gave the special awards.
